Well deserved. A bit steep but worth the contract.

Love it. This could mean Iorio is being shopped since the defense is locked up for the foreseeable future

I’m a bit hesitant about this contract. He’s played really well in pretty much every role asked but 3 mil is going to make other contracts a bit more of a challenge, and probably a year more than I hoped. As long as Iorio stays around though, I’m happy.

Doesn't TVR play on the left side as well?

He did when Justin Schultz was on the team two years ago. He hasn’t played much of it since

Good price for a second pairing, but a little much for third. It he can maintain his level of play for the next three years, then this will be a great contract. If he slips to third, it won't be a terrible deal.

It's a very solid D Core, my worry is more about getting much better Top 9 scoring to keep pace with other eastern conference teams now.

This seems okay. But he's already 31 and is a high end third pairing dman. Including Gustavsson he's been 6th in time on ice by a dman in Washington this year. Last year he was 5th. This year was his most toi since his sophomore year almost a decade ago. He's a third pairing defenseman not second pair

TOI tells far from the whole story with him, he’s been competent playing 1st line with Sandin, 1st/2nd line when Washington was missing Carlson, and has excelled in every situation he’s been thrown into. He could very easily be a consistent 2nd pairing d-man like he was whenever Washington needed him to be.

Except he's 31 and has never been a second pairing dman before for any extended length of time. I suppose the risk isn't huge at 3 mil, but I never like the idea of signing a guy at his age off a career year

I’m not sure he is a huge risk on a 3 year deal, the Caps have had success with guys in their mid 30s on defense previously (most notably Niskanen), he’s scoring more this year (likely due to an increase role and more favorable deployment), but has been consistently good over his time in DC, and it can’t hurt as a mentor for Chesley and Iorio.

I agree, $3M is pretty steep for a 3rd pairing guy. It's not the end of the world, but it's certainly an inefficient use of cap space.
