Yeah, this scenario is based on the what if.. It has been said that Matthews may want to play elsewhere, especially in the USA. I’m thinking so many teams lose their star players when they go to UFA (Just look at the Tavares move when he signed in TOR) so I would hope (even as a Habs fan) that Toronto don’t lose Matthews for nothing. While he has no NMC on his contract, he’s got REALLY high value now. So if they trade him before he’s less valuable (he may play the I ain’t gonna sign long term to any traded to team) why not get a crap load for him now? They need the cap space, Tavares is the leader of the team and you get to keep Marner.

Dubas may offer him the moon, but at what cost? And will Matthews sail out anyway? All players say they want to stay put, but when the money bag and better conditions (sun and less stress) are put in front of them… they jump..

This would have to be with an extension in place. No team is giving up that much for a rental, no matter who it is. In terms of other teams that could be involved - I think LA has to be the front runner.

Also, he does have a full NMC that kicks in the first day the leafs are eligible to offer him a contract.

i would think roster players would need to come back. With Marner. Nylander, Tavares still around they can still compete for a stanley cup.

Exactly!! After seeing Tavares and Matthews play in the series.. Tavares is the guy I’d keep. Matthews is still not battling those corners and throwing everything in there to win … Big reason they got took out by Mtl two years ago. If he ever figure this out, he’ll bring the cup somewhere.

Tavares may not have his points but he’s the guy who’ll win you the game. Same for Marner.

Leafs need to make a decision on Matthews before his value goes down.

I would think this would be the reasoning behind this trade, it’s close to home for him, they have 100 picks in two years in order to rebuild and have the space to bring in players around him.. ARZ would benefit from a guy like him and Bettman would salivate knowing he could bring the value to that team and sell seats…
