I think Tampa wins this one in the long-term. Now they have enough cap space to sign Palat, Johnson, Sustr, and possibly another decent defenseman. And they have a guy like Sergachev who's gonna bolster that blue line for the future.

Palat was always staying. I honestly hope I'm dreaming right now. It should have been Johnson going...

Yea, but think long-term. Drouin would have been great to keep but he will demand more pay than Johnson. Also, Tampa has Brayden Point who is developing nicely so with Drouin gone they can afford giving Point a big contract and adding him to their core.

Yeah, I'm surprised it wasn't Johnson. MTL needs centers and Point can easily replace Johnson as the 2C.

Montreal just got a lot better offensively, but Sergachev is A+ prospect.

Definitely a major trade. Granted, Drouin is a lot younger than Gomez was at the time of his trade, but the last major trade involving a Habs prospect defenseman was Ryan McDonough. Didn't work out well for Montreal. Does that mean Chucky is gone?

Point is much better than Johnny. It would have been fine to keep Drouin because when Point's contract is up, Stralman and Coburn's would be expiring. Coburn would leave and Stralman's pay would drop.

Chucky for Duchense now? Can't imagine they'd keep Galchenyuk at this point

You don’t build a team through free agency or trades, you build it through the draft. And you need to be patient with these guys ...

... says the man who trades away an amazing drafted defenseman after only giving him a 4 game NHL trial. squinty smile

They most certainly need Galchenyuk, he's their center. Maybe Gallagher or Pacioretty gets traded now, but I doubt. Probably Byron.

This habs fan is ecstatic. Can't wait to watch Drouin wearing our colours next year. Exactly the type of offensive force we needed.

Open season on Montreal prospects and picks. Bergevin must be feeling the heat to win now.

He'll pick up a center next and a D-man to play with Weber or Petry. Both likely on the wrong side of 30.

I was hoping that none of our young forwards would be moved, bit if someone had to go, I was hoping it'd be Johnson. Sad Face.

They wouldn't have gotten the same kind of return for Johnson. Sergachev has the potential to be a franchise defenseman.

A point worth noting: This past season, the Canadiens scored 223 goals as a team. This isn't too far below the league average of 227, but, after Max Pacioretty's 35 goals, the next best goal scorer was Paul Byron, at 22. Nobody else had more than 20. Jonathan Drouin scored more goals than everybody on the Canadiens' roster except for Pacioretty and Byron. So I can see why the Canadiens would be interested in Drouin.

That being said, this trade suuuuuuure solved a few of Steve Yzerman's problems. One less RFA to have to shell out the big bucks for, one more protection spot that just opened up, and a strong defensive prospect that could make the Lightning's roster out of training camp next year and aid immensely on the left side of the defensive corps. Bergevin, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have solved his most pressing issues with this trade. Still need to find a more robust top-line center than Phillip Danault, still need an eventual replacement on the top defensive pairing for Andrei Markov.
