Dubas is trigger happy Sandin trade could end up haunting the Leafs

Created by: ALjet12

Initial Creation Date: Mar. 12, 2023
Published: Mar. 12, 2023

Description
Even taking the first rounder and a replacement player in consideration which is still fair value for the player at the time. You don't give up a 23 year old top 4 puck carrying quarterback when you still have full control of him and are not strapped for capspace. Short sided move on Dubas even if the Leafs make it past the first round. Dubas should of put Keefe in his place before making the trade. This will cost Dubas his job .

Lets say this as an Isles fan I know when my GM has screwed up, look at the Devon Toews trade the return is not as bad as that but considering the isles were cap strapped gong into the pandemic year its even more moronic for Dubas because he had full control over Sandin. My word of advice don't be shocked when Rielly falls off and there is no one to replace him, you will know the haunting feeling in due time.

Yeah because you have a competent coach you knows how to make his lines

Riley has already fell off most leafs fans don’t like him.

well, you see the difference here is that Toews was already one of the better 2 way defenders in the league and Lou traded him for scraps because he signed a bunch of bad players to bad deals.
Dubas traded Sandin because he could not out play the guys in front of him and now he is literally getting every bounce in 3 of his 4 games. Like, Sandin is playing well but he is getting 75% offensive zone starts, has a 17.5 on ice shooting % and a 110 PDO. These number are hilariously unsustainable.
Comparing a guy who was elite who continued to be elite after a trade to a guy who was playing like a bottom pairing guy to bobby orr numbers in a hilariously small sample size is simply rediculous and the only reason an islanders fan would make a thread about it is to try and rile up leafs fans.

he hasnt fallen off, people are just realising that he's always just been an offensive defender and not the 2 way guy they dreamed he was. And he's still a very good offensive defender

That’s the opposite of true. But we found a really good pairing in Sandin in TVR and it’s been outstanding.

But Lavi switches the forwards lines almost every game and we wonder why we don’t get a result. Recently tho Milano sTrome Oshie

First off when Devon Toews played with the Islanders he wasn't a superstar yet. He only played 2 seasons 101. Put up 31 points in his last season but should good underlying numbers to show his potential . The biggest problem with Leafs is they didn't give him the minutes to showcase his ability Sandin was anchor on the third pair playing an average of 16.25 min/game. That falls on your coach and GM. The only time when Sandin had a chance is when everyone else got injured

I gotta say, it is genuinely amusing to watch so many people this board do a hard 180 from "lol, Leafs fans over value Sandin he cant even get into the top 4!" to "Lol, Leafs traded away a super elite guy and got robbed!"

In effect the Leafs traded for two full years of McCabe (cost a Leafs a first rounder) for three controllable years of Sandin. Personally I don't like the trade as a Leafs fan. Is McCabe better than Sandin now? That's what win now Dubas traded for, a so called improvement over Sandin.
But even at that, gee look what Tampa gave up for Jeannot.....wasn't Sandin worth more than what is likely the 32nd pick in this years draft.

first off, Toews was putting up elite defensive numebers and comparable offensive numbers to what he did when he got to Colorado.
And yes, the leafs gave Sandin plenty of chances to make the top 4, Rielly and Muzzin had been hurt for large swaths of Sandin's career and he never played well enough to take those minutes. Sandin played well in soft bottom pair minutes and couldnt take that extra step in toronto no matter how many chances he got. Pretending otherwise is revisionist

Nah I always knew Sandin was a top 4 dman that can quaterback a powerplay. I wanted the Isles to offersheet him last season given the chance. I was shocked that the Leafs traded him.

so did lots of leafs fans, and they got nothing but crap for it from people on here. But the fact remains that he never showed anything close to his performance in washington as a leaf and he is not going to sustain anything close to these numbers.

No remember that Toews had Mayfield to shelter Toews from the Defensive responsibilities Toews only showed his defensive capabilities when he was paired with Makar

that's not true at all, in fact the numbers show that Toews was carrying mayfield if anything when he was on the islanders and he simply had to work less hard when paired with the best defenceman in the league when he got to colorado

just like the marchment trade, the place fills up with guys who had never heard of him until he was in his 2nd year as a panther chomping at the bit to call out such an obvious bad move by toronto

I bet you this Sandin is consistently a 35-40 point player every year.

you mean slightly higher than the pace he put up in bottom paring minutes with the leafs? yeah, that wouldnt be surprising at all if he got an extra 5 or so minutes a game. That's significantly different than the 164 point pace he's running with the caps so far.

I just saw Sandin was being shelter the past two season and we needed a puck carrying Dman on the left side to carry the puck out of the zone to replace Leddy/Toews. When I looking at Dunn, Sandin and Chyrunn last offseason
