23-24

Created by: Devsfan25
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 13, 2023
Published: Mar. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1st line: This line has the 3 most dynamic offensive players on it. They’ve struggled a bit together to start, but they should be fine in the long run.

2nd line: Tatar and Hischier have always had good chemistry and Mercer has been the perfect complementary piece for them. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Hopefully Tatar is willing to come back on a slight discount

3rd line: 2 extremely responsible defensive players with our best forward prospect. Playing Holtz with two defensively responsible players should allow Holtz to display his offensive ability. Palat and Holtz played well together this past preseason so hopefully they can reignite some of that chemistry. Holtz will have a short leash as Boqvist can easily step into his spit

4th line: Typical gritty 4th line. McLeod and Lazar are both good in the circle and Lemieux is your typical 4th line tough guy. McLeod possesses great speed while the other two will provide the physicality. Boqvist or Bastian can slot into any of those 4th line roles for injury or poor play reasons

1st pair: Our top pairing for the past 2 years and it will continue to be for awhile

2nd pair: A stud offensive dman with a great reliable shutdown guy

3rd pair: Good veteran shutdown guy with our highly touted d prospect

Goaltending: Cut ties with Blackwood. Run with Vanecek and Schmid

Completely untrue. He’s still a young goalie that can win games in the NHL. A team like Buffalo, LA, MTL, OTT are all teams in desperate need of goaltending. Goalies don’t come cheap and a 3rd is more than fair for Blackwood. Would BUF rather trade for a young Blackwood or run with Craig Anderson again?

Keep Nemec in Utica for another year. If he plays,

2023-24: ELC
2024-25: ELC
2025-26: ELC
2026-27: RFA #1

If he slides,

2023-24: AHL
2024-25: ELC
2025-26: ELC
2026-27: ELC

Could be ~$4-5m savings in 2026-27 when he is in his prime. Its worth waiting a year while he is still developing.

We may get someone to pay us...problem is (a) he hasn't been healthy; (b) many will know we won't extend long-term and we might be cap-squeezed to offer $3.36m QO.
I could see it go both ways.

Someone will take a shot on him. Too many teams need goalies and Blackwood will probably be one of the better options simply based off age and his potential ceiling if he stays healthy

I don't think the blues target another winger since they already brought in Kapanen and Vrana

What would be your d pairings then. I think that HAS to be our top 4. Get Luke rolling next year and don’t bury him with 3rd pairing minutes. Who would be graves partner

I agree someone will take shot on him. He may even get 3-years.
But hard to predict what we'd get in trade for him.
If it turned out to be 2nd round value, or 6th round value, neither would surprise me.

Without any new additions...(in whichever pairings work best)...

Siegs - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Bahl - Walsh

...or...with Graves...

Siegs - Hamilton
Graves - Marino
Bahl - Hughes

...or...with short-term Sevo replacement to buy time on Nemec...

Siegs - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Bahl - TBD

I think Graves will definitely be back. You can’t run out Hughes, Bahl, and Walsh. That’d be a HORRIBLE defense. I think if you don’t play Nemec, then I would do

Siegenthaler- Hamilton
Hughes- Marino
Graves- Smith/Bahl

We still have Smith under contract; I just buried him here for Nemec

Normally I'd agree but this might be an exception, especially if Buch moves to C full time. Might be too good to pass up.

I am a big believer in rolling out one rookie at a time on defense. Bahl will be 2nd year guy, so unless Hughes jumps into top-4 from the start, I think we should be extending Graves or adding someone who has a year or two left.

So I think the 7 guys you have above works.

But if no Graves...do we trust Walsh...or a short-term UFA veteran...or do we burn a year of 23-year old Nemec on ELC to force a 19-year old Nemec into lineup?

If no Graves, then u have to bring in a veteran UFA. Even if it was a one year deal for a guy like Kulikov, you’re gonna want someone with experience on that third pairing. Graves would be a big miss tho if he’s willing to sign a 4x4 bc he’s a solid dman with size and he’s in his prime rn. Him and Marino would expire at the same time also and by that time, you can move one or both of them when you need to pay Luke/Nemec

Agree. Could also trade guys like Foote, Walsh, etc for cap casualties. MIN has a surplus of dmen and cap squeeze. VGK may too.

We will see, but will any of those teams pay $3-3.3m (his QO) for a goalie that can't consistently play above .900 nor stay healthy?

We aren't not qualifying, then signing, then trading him. If we don't qualify, he's a UFA and will go anywhere for free.

Adin Hill was a .906 goalie and would be around a $1m cheaper than Blackwood, and he went for a 4th a year beyond the coming draft. That is probably your best comparable.

Buffalo has UPL and Comrie still signed for next season. Anderson will be retired. If they trade for a goalie it would need to be a significant upgrade, and Blackwood has not shown himself to be that. The Devils play much much better defensively than Buffalo, you stick Blackwood on the Sabres and his stats will very likely plummet into the UPL/Comrie levels. Buffalo also isn't likely to commit to another young goalie as they already have UPL, and Levi should be leaving college this season.

Buffalo will ride Anderson until he drops dead.
Just watch a replay of last nights game, he did not receive a star but he certainly stole that game.
Once Luukkonen becomes more consistant he will be fine.
He won the rookie of the month in January going 6-2-1 with a .907 SV%, only to be 2-5 with a 0.891SV% since January.
Buffalo may give up prospect (i.e. Bloom), or much later pick but certainly not a 3rd.
