He's not worth that much, and the one year means it doesn't eat up a chunk of the cap for as long. It follows the blueprint the Canes used to land Kotkaniemi. 6.1 for 1 year and then 4.82 for 8 years after that, this would do that, but on a player with more offensive upside taking advantage of New York's cap issues because they just would not be able to match it

Offer sheets only go through when they're for way more than the other club can afford, or is willing to risk being stuck with, because the contract has driven into untradable territory. Otherwise, all they accomplish is bad blood between GMs, soured relationships with a player and the club, tied up assets while the process plays out and then if they actually go through - the prize is giving up a boat load of picks for an overpaid player.

I will never understand the fascination with offer sheets.

Because if done properly it works. KK has been a great asset to the canes and is clearly the staal replacement in a year or 2. We had the cap space to offer the initial 6.1 mil so why not. we tried trading for kk straight up and the habs wanted Jarvis for him. So instead we got KK at a discount and utilized the cap space we had to steal a player for only a 1st and 3rd which is much less than Jarvis.

That's why the player you do it with needs to be a good target. For Carolina, Kotkaniemi was a great pick up because he's been an ideal Trocheck replacement. I love KK and even I was shocked at how productive he's been with his counting stats this year. Lafreniere is a former 1st overall pick with immense talent. If they can get him producing, that may be the scoring winger they have been missing. Anyone that is already proven at the NHL level is going to straight up be matched. 21 years old, struggling in New York, getting scratched, relations may have already soured.

If NHL GMs werent such babies, offer sheets would be a fantastic tool.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts......

This is reality and it's a great way for a GM to get blackballed and it RARELY works out, it's just a dick wagging display

Doesn't have to be that way and it is embarrassing that it is. The NHL (not the sport of hockey) is such an embarrassing league and this is one reason why.

I don't disagree with you there, the pettiness and old boys club mentality is pretty tired...

That was retaliatory for Aho and I highly doubt it would have happened without Montreal firing the first shot. It hasn't been bad all things considered, but at the end of the day, Carolina still gave up a 1st and a 3rd for a guy that has never scored 40 points in this league and KK is easily the best result of an offer sheet in the last 25 years... Dustin Penner...

Laf to s a prime candidate for an offer sheet of the KK type, whether Carolina does it though is another topic since it would sour another relationship in the league and I don't think they need that type of attention again.

The days of ridiculously bad offer sheets are gone since the length of contracts has been brought under control.

I think that it takes more than 1/$6.25M to snag Lafreniere, especially considering that our 1st is extremely late and because I think that GMs learned their lesson from the KK saga. I think that my prior proposal of 1x$8.4M would do it because they would have to trade Kreider or Panarin for them to match it. The Canes could then get Laf to agree to an 8 year contract around $7M/year.

a 6.25 million offer sheet would leave 10 million for the Rangers to get their other 2 RFAs and then 6 roster spots. That should be more than plenty.

The thing is that a $6.25M offer sheet could theoretically be matched by cap dumping someone like Goodrow. Making the offer sheet in the $8M range forces them to legitimately consider letting him go.

No reason. Habs can match and not worry. Lafreniere gives you a real chance of landing the player
