GMKH today : "But I do envision there’s a time coming soon where a pick that we’ve acquired becomes a trade asset instead of a future player."
Depends how you interpret "coming soon"

Not even close next year.

Maybe in 2 seasons with Edmundson/Hoffman/Pitlick/Wideman off the books IF they can add Dubois, Hutson and a starting goalie.

I just don't see the point in drafting players we won't even be able to sign (50 max.). Wouldn't these picks would be better spent on players that can actually help us?

If the Habs get lucky in the draft and get Bedard it would be the best line in the NHL, LW: Caufield C: Suzuki RW: Bedard = unstoppable line. Then we'd just have to work on the 3rd and 4th line. There are a lot of young star D's on the Habs but nowhere to use it because of the older guys, who we need to trade besides a good 1st liner like Matheson. Which means that there will be space for the younger talent

I have no clue what you are talking about. You do understand there is 2-4 years between drafting a player and making him sign his 1st contract right?!?!

We have 11 picks in the first 4 rounds in 2023 and 2024. We cannot give 11 contracts to these players, even in 2-4 years. We would be better off packaging them for another Dach-ish player who can help us now.

We also have 10 contracts expiring this season. LOL

And some of the 11 drafted will never be signed just because they wont be good enough....

You are really seing a problem where there is none.

Rebuilds kinda end when star players end their ELCs and get big money as RFAs.

You're right. Even if just two years from being drafted, then they are on inexpensive ELC contracts for three more years.
What's the issue, having too many young stars?

I look at it this way.
Most of this season has been development for the defense and evaluation of the closest to NHL ready players.
Next season will be development of the forwards we identify as worth a roster spot.
In the meantime we are ticking down the clock on players who will move to make way for those players while raising responsibilities of those remaining.

Year 3 we can begin inserting a couple players a year alongside our more developed young core group. That's when we can begin looking at acquiring/upgrading players. We should be a bubble team by that point at least.
Rising beyond that is then down to the performance of that group and continued development gained through experience.

We can reinforce/speed up the process through trades along the way, and RHD and goal remain our primary concerns.
Year 4 we should be in the playoffs and building towards true contention from there.

2023-24 if the get Bedard
2024-25 if Mesar, Beck, Farrell, etc all develop quickly. 2025-26 more likely
