Leafs blow it up Thought Exercise Only

Created by: Hockey_Hippy

Description
For the record I do not think MLSE moves on from the Leafs braintrust and none of this will happen. But what the hell, let's say they do and bring in someone who has nothing invested in the current roster. I dealt Rielly to likely the only place he would sign off on and returned Matthews to Arizona because he is an instant re-tool in terms of assets garnered. Provorov is a UFA in two seasons. If he works out great, if he doesn't he is off the books in two years and the Leafs have plenty of cap space and assets to find a defensive defenseman for the playoffs if they need to.

You're not getting Cooley he's untouchable. If matthews wants to leave he's a ufa next season and can sign for free simple as that

What if he doesn't want to leave. There is nothing to indicate he does but wishful thinking on the part of Arizona fans. Everything he has said and done indicates he likes Toronto and wants to stay here.

But again, like I detailed in the description, this is a thought exercise. I do not expect any of this to happen.

Any expected return for Matthews should be based on something similar to what EK65 got Ottawa (excluding the pick being top 5 specifically)

He has a full nmc next year so he's either staying or going none of this bs trades that make no sense to any team

Not our GM. Owner. It's worse because he can't be fired. In all fairness though, I get how he wants the team to win.
Also, no shot we'd do that. We already have 2 LD making more than 7 mil a season.

Why is Arizona going after rentals? Are they expecting to challenge for the Cup next year?

Canucks easily decline. Don’t have the cap space or roster space for Rielly. He’s also an offensively minded defenseman, which the Canucks already have too many of.

Also zero chance Arizona does that. You’re asking them to give up what is most likely 3 top 5 picks plus more for a rental when they are still clearly a rebuilding team. If Matthews wants to go to Arizona and Arizona wants Matthews, it will be a free agent signing next offseason.

I don't get people who say this. If Matthews isn't signed this offseason they will not let him walk. So no, it's really not as simple as that. & Arizona management and ownership finally having someone to market and push that market over the top in terms of publicity....yeah, no, I don't think anyone would be "untouchable". Nobody is ever untouchable.

Why would toronto trade him and make their team worse so they can ensure they don't lose him for nothing. Matthews is an insane player and would be a detrimental to trade in terms of playoffs so I see it 2 ways
1 he signs in toronto for a major contract and effects the future spending of the team.
2 he leaves after next year and signs in Arizona (or wherever) for a major contract where the pressure is less and close to home.

The fact is no one is trading for him when he can leave after 1 year. Toronto won't trade him because they want to keep him and his nmc starting next year will ensure Matthews gets what he wants. The fact of the matter is matthews has all the leverage in where he goes and no team will pay full price for him period.

I'd expect it to be Eichel Plus Plus.

Eichel plus a 3rd netted Buffalo the following: Peyton Krebs, Alex Tuch, a top 10 protected first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Given the vast differences between Eichel and Matthews, you can probably expect a similar gap in the package.

Can you read? Look at the description. In case you do not feel the need to scroll up, I will put it here again:

Eichel had 5 years of term. Matthews only has 1... Also the difference between Matthews and Eichel really isn't that large at all

Lol your opinion means nothing either because you don’t own the team. If you really knew our owner, you’d know that he is a pretty cheap guy. Even if he wanted to trade for Reilly, the Canucks simply cannot. No cap space means no trade

I think if the owner wants something done, it gets done. And judging by what has happened in Vancouver in the past when what is done at behest of ownership doesn't work, the front office gets thrown under the bus.

I mean you're right. My opinion means squat, but Aquillini's does. And he has repeatedly shown that shiny baubles excite him. Rielly is not nothing. What he does, he does well. His career shows this. This year does not.

But sure hotshot tell me about how much you know about his game based on the bloody stat sheet.
