Trades can be done at any time, but after the deadline the traded player(s) can not play in the playoffs. That is at least for NHL. Not sure about AHL, but I would expect it to be the same.

Ps. This was also just for signing rights.

A lot of trades like this involve a non NHL player going to the AHL team. This could be the case here. Perhaps the Charlotte Checkers will be getting someone.

The only thing enticing I can see from this trade for Florida is that you're making sure the kid doesn't sign with a team in your division but the prospect isn't McDavid either so why do this? Zito woke up, called Blake and was like "I've got a guy out of the NCAA that we won't sign, want him for free?".
