I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a late 1st for a guy projected to put up 70 points over a full year on the worst team in the league, who is only making $1.25m after retention.

Plus/Minus is one of the worst stats to track in Hockey, and is incredibly misleading. Is your team good? Your +/- is gonna be great. Does your team suck? Your +/- is gonna suck. Johnny Gaudreau was a +64 on the Flames last year, and is going to finish around -35 this year. Is he a dramatically worse player suddenly, or has the quality of players around him suddenly changed?

I can make the same argument for points. Do you play on a good team and you don't get to play in an elevated role? Your production is going to take a hit. Do you get top PP time on a dumpster fire? You're going to have inflated stats

Anyway, so if you want to ignore +/- explain why his xGA is one of the worst on the Sharks roster? Why is he below replacement level in his own end? He is outscoring his xGF for good measure

I think you can cherry pick whichever stats you want to build the narrative you want. He's one of the only forwards on the team with a corsi% above 50, is being deployed against top lines, and still has a positive GSVA. The Athletic values him at $4.8m, and you think he still isn't worth a 1st at 1.25m, just because he has a below average defensive metric.

Evolving hockey has him as a net negative, and Dom's model also says Nick Suzuki isn't worth his deal... you really want to trust that?

Hockey Reference has him as a net positive, but if you're just going to keep moving the goalposts, this is no longer a good use of my time.
