They wouldn't!

Despite the ridiculous Anderson hate here. His value is far beyond Mantha and his issues. They'd just keep Anderson, whos actually effective. The whole point of trading Anderson is getting a young asset in their window not a reclamation projection at the same age.

Already saw this draft pick trade before. Just more galaxy brain trading for trading without even knowing the draft positioning.

Well to be fair I value the cap space more than both players. Anderson's contract would disappear and Mantha has one year remaining and you'd trade him for whatever at the 2023 TDL. I don't care about both players. Plus Mantha is from MTL and on the final year of his deal, meaning he will play his best hockey on the final year of his deal and would want to get paid on his next contract after this upcoming season.

The only way they'd need cap space would be to sign players like PLD. And, if that was the plan, Anderson would stay as he'd be useful if they were trying to buy and compete. It's clearing space without an end game.

Fair points. I actually thank Andersons contract is a good contract. He could explode in WSH with 30 goals in 2023 and beyond. All positives for WSH. The rebuild for MTL should extend past next year

The problem with your draft-pick trade is that it isn't trading a 2023 pick (#7) for a 2024 pick -- for the trade to be any good for Montreal, the pick would have to move into 2025 because the 2024 Florida pick is conditional upon not being in the top 10. So Montreal is either getting a later pick than #10 in 2024 or some pick in 2025, which could be even worse. For this idea to make any sense at all from the Habs' PoV, there would have to be additional conditional picks in Montreal's favor.

Yeah that's probably true. Perhaps replace the 2024 FLA pick from PHI for the Flyers' unconditional 1st Rd pick (2024) would make more sense. I feel these picks are magic beans haha. My feeling is MTL should punt the pick to next years draft.

The most pressing question I have is, why do you want them to pass on 1 Generational talent, 1 elite center, 3 top line forwards (2 centers and a winger) and a boat load of top 6/top 4 forwards and D men to select a bottom 6 center at best in Honzek who is likely as many as 3 years away from even making the NHL if he ever does, when all those ahead of him could transition in the next 1-2 years. This is like trading a lottery pick in the McDavid draft for Evgeny Svechnikov, Collin White or Brock Boeser. You just don't do that unless you are trying to lose your job.

30 yo Josh anderson at 5.5 million isn't gonna help anyone compete. too expensive to be a bottom 6 player on a contender and not good enough to be a top 6 player on a contender

Yeah u gotta give a few 1st rounders to unload Anderson's contract, he's a major cap dump. 35 points a season for 5.5 million. You can compare is contract to Jack Campbell's

Outside the top 6 though, I’d agree that the class is overrated.

Absolute nonsense comparing a power forward with 21 goals and even great offensive metrics this season to a struggling goalie.
False equivalency doesn’t do your comment justice. You are comparing an ocean to the desert

And even that struggling goalie wouldn’t need multiple 1sts to dump. No player has ever been dumped for multiple 1sts even OEL got value.
You are saying something that has never ever happened. Maybe do some research

I have a thought on that. people who say (not you but GM's, etc) are the ones that ended up sucking at it. The truth is they aren't magic beans at all. Players are what you think they are generally but if you don't develop them properly, they might as well be magic beans. The solution is not stop caring about it but to improve development so that succeed more often. There is a reason some teams are better at drafting than others. Drafting a player is only one part of the process.

Awful deal for Washington, Mantha being moved would be to clear cap and not for a worse contract that goes for longer. Anderson is a worse asset than Mantha, and the Capitals didn't give Conor Sheary a raise from his 1.5 mil salary, so they sure as hell don't want a worse winger defensively who's putting up the same amount of points this year as Sheary.

Awful deal for Wsh. Right now, teams (especially WSH who is still trying to contend right now) would value cap space over either player. Mantha has been beyond unpredictable and Anderson is not worth 3 more years of $5.5mil (he is a bottom 6 player straight up no other way around it - sorry for being direct). Why would the Caps trade a struggling player on an expiring contract for another inconsistent bottom 6 forward with basically the same contract but 3 more years...

Sorry you are stuck with Anderson's contract though
