Trading off summer time

Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 22, 2023
Published: Mar. 22, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- WASH Trade -
* on the Mantha trade, maybe WASH would put a third round pick instead of the 2nd; then Habs would give a 4th and a 5th. The only reason I could see the pick is added is for the salary cap HABS provide to WASH. It may be removed completely and only returns a 3rd or 4th pick for WASH which could be more probable. But in this day and age where ARZ have 37 picks in 3 years for salary dumps.. Why not!

- NYR trade -
This is assuming they need cap space to keep Kane or Tarasenko; Let's not forget they also have Chytil, Miller and a 2nd goalie to find on the market, but have little space on the cap to fit them all in, so they trade Laffy since he is taking too much time to develop. Let's not forget he was a Gorton move so he's ready to give up a 2025 1st for him, and prospects.

- WIN Trade -
This is if Chev finally gives in and wants to settle the file; it also takes into account that Dubois has said openly wanting to go to MTL and will not sign long term extension with teams making him a tradeable but not exclusive assets for the other teams.

HABS provide two potential prospects, half salary sniper, and picks which can all be turned or kept at Chev's discretion.

- Slaf File -
I send him to Laval to let him develop; I bring up Mesar to keep him company and may even provide a good linesman to develop at the same time. We all saw that he wasn't prepared to get hit in the NHL.

I also send down my first pick; I try to avoid the same mistakes twice.

A Winnipeg doesnt need or want those things, those pieces are terrible for this trade. An OS is better for the Jets

An easy no for Winnipeg. Hoffman isn't anything True North would want to bring in and would be Winnipeg's 7th best winger. He has negative value to the Jets.

Norlinder would be 6 or 7 on the Jets left side and will never have a shot at the NHL in Winnipeg. No value.

Mysak is an okay B level prospect.

Add in Beck and you might be competitive if the Jets want an all futures return.

Or, if it's too much, the Jets trade him elsewhere. It makes no difference to the Jets which you choose.

Drury says NO THANKS. And your premise of saving cap space makes no sense because Laffy's bridge deal of around $2.5m/year would be off-set by Edmundson and Pazetta's contracts. Drury does counter offer a plate of Poutine for Xhekaj.

Nah, they accept and even pay for the next 10 years of airfare for the Habs in order to thank them for not asking retention on the contract.

Hoffman (50% retained)
Mysak
Norlinder
1st rd ‘23
4th rd ‘23

For PLD

If I’m WIN, this is a place to start, but it needs to be improved. Taking Mysak & Norlinder out of the deal and replacing it with a better prospect, and I think WIN could be tempted, but only if they think they’ll be selling next year.

What if it was
Hoffman (50% retained)
Beck
1st rd ‘23

And before WIN fans say Hoffman isn’t worth anything, he’s a 4.5M cap hit. With 50% retained, he’ll be a 2.25M cap hit to the Jets. If they are sellers at next year’s deadline, dealing Hoffman with another 50% retained means whoever acquires Hoffman will get a pro-rated 20 goal scorer for a 1.125M cap hit for a playoff run. That gets you a 2nd rd pick, maybe more with a little luck.

To recap: WIN could end up with
Beck,
a 1st rd in ‘23,
and likely a future 2nd rd pick, or better.

All that for a guy they know they will lose eventually.

I’m not sure you’ll get two prime assets and another good asset, for a guy that you know won’t be back.

Again. And I reiterate, IF THE JETS ARE SELLERS NEXT SPRING…

I can the Rangers taking that trade if they think they risk losing LAF to 4.3m second round buyout offer. They just might be satisfied with the 2025 Flames first rounder.
PLD, if the Jets think can't get more at TDL, maybe they take the trade this summer and look to spend the 6m by not having PLD on another centre.

I don't think Beck is going to be an moveable asset at this time. Hugues wants him in. I would think they can improve on the prospect list versus the one I put up of course. It's a matter of who? Hutson maybe? He's hot right now, but Habs have too many small players and have a good potentail pool of Defense coming up, so he may be a very high prospect for most teams out there looking for a quaterback for their offense in a few years.

I know, Hutson is a player most wouldn't move out, but.. To get a guy like Dubois, at some point you need to move something out that can be looked at as a win for Chev.

I'd change it up for :
Hoffman (50%)
Hutson
1st pick 2023 (FLA).

This would mean, you keep that second pick and able to keep Beck. Chev gets peace of mind about Dubois, a first pick in 2023, and Hutson who's been on top of lots of hockey news lately.

Beck and the 1st are a real good start, but with Hoffman's character issues the Jets aren't touching him. He'd be number 7 on the Jets wing depth, so is a waste of cap space.

If he's worth a 2nd, how about you trade him for that 2nd first and then add that to the offer for PLD? Shouldn't be hard according to your assumptions.

I see there being right around a 0% chance the Jets consider Hoffman as part of the deal. I understand Montreal fans are anxious to dump him, but the same reasons you want to dump him are the same reasons no one wants him.

Of course the Habs can’t get a 2nd for him because whoever acquires him is getting a 2.25M cap hit, not the 1.125M you could offer.

But the next team acquiring him gets him for 1.125M$. That’s where Hoffman is valuable.

But hey, if you think you’ll get more than that for PLD, you can hold on to him, and we will be more than happy to scoop him up in the summer of ’24 without losing any prospects or draft picks.

I’d even offer sheet him with a 1yr deal at 7M$ if I’m the Habs. If WIN doesn’t match, it’s a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd. If they do, then PLD is UFA in the following summer. Good for the Habs either way.

All pure fantasy with no basis in reality.

Go get that 2nd for Hoffman and then come back. Good luck with that.

I think all teams would welcome another Montreal joke sheet. It will give us something to laugh at all summer.

Why would PLD sign an offer sheet for less thanhe can get in arbitration? Zero chance he signs a lowball offer sheet. That's not well thought out at all.

Montreal won't have a shot at PLD as a UFA as he likely doesn't get there and if he does Montreal won't be able to compete with the American teams.

Why wouldn’t MTL be able to compete with other teams. Lots of money coming off the books soon, owner with deep pockets, one of the best barns to play in…

Better tax situations, better weather and lifestyle for a young millionaire in many American cities.

Mainly though he'll probably already be signed long-term somewhere.

Bah, he has no clue what value a sniper has in the NHL... And they can get more picks as they flip him at TDL.. Can't see the value of actually getting something for a player that is ready to play in the AHL than continue playing for the Jets.

The only issues with the Offer sheet, we don't have that second .. So we couldn't unless Chev offers money for Barron, Jonsson-Fjällby, and Samberg which would push them with no money against the cap for Dubois. Habs could then make a play up to 6,302,230$/1yr and get dubois for a 1st and a third. But if Chev didn't respond, then Habs wouldn't play nice and probably hold off until Chev understand he's getting nothing good in return at TDL if Dubois hasn't changed his tune about long term with another team. He may also be a sore on Chev's back when they try to deal him to other team just to p*ss him off.

That's close minded. If Hoffman brings back a 2nd or 3rd and it only costs Winnipeg $1.125M to get that pick, any team with the cap space would jump on that. The going rate for that amount of retention is a 4th/5th and there's always a taker for those deals as well.

It's silly to reject added value because you don't like/need a player if he's not even meant to play for your team. This is like Montreal saying, "hey, we'll give you a 2nd(or 3rd) to retain ~$1M as a middle man in a trade". No GM is turning that down if they have $1M in cap space.

Now if you don't think Hoffman has more value than a 4th @ $1.125M, that's a different argument.

Well, that's just it. No matter how much you retain on Hoffman, he isn't returning a 2nd. That's why I'm saying, go out and get that 2nd and add that to the deal.

Don't forget when Montreal signed Hoffman, it was at the end of the free agency period, because no one else wanted Hoffman. He's not a desirable piece to other teams. At the TDL as a rental, you may get a 5th or lower, imo, but he's just not worth the trouble.

He also has character issues, something that True North would avoid.

Hoffman was signed on the first day of free agency?
Believe he had choices as well. It's not like nobody would sign him.

He was signed July 28th not the first day and that's not what I heard at the time. Speculation was that he was done in the NHL and then Montreal signed him. I remember all the pundits being surprised at the dollars and term of the contract since there had been no interest in Hoffman until that time.

Anyways, I guess that's besides the point. The point is that the Jets aren't taking on a bad, unneeded player in hopes that they can move him. They'd just look elsewhere. They have no incentive to take a low value player that does nothing for them. They just move on to an offer that has pieces they want.

So all montreal fans know it on here... The jets will not take money back in a PLD deal unless its a player they want long term and whos cap hit is close to their cash value. Jets parent company is trying to close a huge real estate and the jets will operate on an internal budget. The jets also won't want to retain on any players to try to get draft picks. Just a little research into the jets and you could come up with actual trades that could make sense.
