Detroit Still Rebuilding

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 26, 2023
Published: Mar. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just a hypothetical if Detroit wanted to add more picks by using cap space.
I tried to also make the team tougher to play against by adding physical forwards who are good defensively.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Carter, Jeff
  2. Petry, Jeff
  3. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Seems Pittsburgh fans want to get rid of these guys.
Petry has a 15 team no trade list. Pretty sure there aren't any teams on his list that would pay for him. Not many teams have the cap space or roster spot. Detroit has both but could sign better free agents, hence the compensation.
Carter is also on the chopping block of Pens fans. He has a full no move clause so they can't trade him or send him to the minors without his approval. He is owed $3M in real money. Pens could threaten to buy him out, if they did he would only get $1M this year and $1M next year. The cap hit is the same. He agrees to waive but not play in Detroit, that way he gets his $3M in salary.
PIT
  1. Kubalik, Dominik
Additional Details:
Pens get Kubalik back in the deal. He's a good offensive player but his play is one dimensional. He is good for 20-30 goals a year. He could actually be good on a line with Granlund as he is a pretty good passer and is actually pretty good defensively.

This trade is made at the draft.
2.
DET

    Probably not for trade though.

    1. I like the Pittsburgh trade. Why not.
    2. Whatever, capdump.
    3. Are we really trading Veleno for a 2nd + capdump? I wouldn't do that at all.
    4. Read #3.
    5. Despite Levi coming into Buffalo and saving them all, I'm pretty sure they're all pretty high on UPL still, doubt that's enough.
    6/7/8. Meh, retaining is retaining.

    1. That Petry contract is 3 more years. He is currently 35. Yuck. Need more to take on that AND Carter.
    3. Agree. That second rounder most likely, if you are lucky, turns into...Joe Veleno but younger. Most likely you don't get an NHLer, honestly.
    4. Minnesota wins this trade in a landslide.
6/7/8 Carolina never gives up high prospects. This is an interesting trade concept and makes some sense.

I mean sure to a bunch of this but I haven't seen any sign that they'd actually spend money even to add picks for those kind of cap dumps. If it fills a hole like petry then maybe, they've been willing to do that. I have no issues moving guys like Zadina or Veleno in these kind of deals we know what they are.

It'll be 2 more years next season, no? Yea it kinda restricts cap, but it leaves time for Anton Johannson and whatever D-Man we draft this year to fully develop.

SUPER LONG rebuild if we go this route. We should take advantage of the Cap space, but I think this is little bit too much. Hathaway and Acciari would be fun adds, but I think it's much more important to give the young guys playing time. Keep the young guys together and don't trade / overpay old UFA's. Unless it's a star player.

Get as many 1sts and 2nds as possible, but be sure that the young guys are playing. Rasmussen for only 1,460,000 it's a steal. We should continue to make these cheap bridge deals. Having players with RFA status is important. Zadina has such a small Cap hit and he is a RFA after his current contract. It's much more likely that a 23y old is improving than getting worse. Yzerman would look like a fool if Zadina would suddenly start to produce on another team.

    1. Would love to get another first
    2. Easy pick gained
    3. Veleno isn't very good. Faksa is big, sound defensively and is really good at faceoffs. Really good penalty killer. Big cap hit for what he brings but could be a good add if the price was right. Only two more years.
    4. Zadina 0.23 ppg average this season. Is ok defensively. Doesn't seem to be showing much progress of getting much better. Could maybe use better puck luck or line mates, I'm kind of just over him. Foligno is a really good defensive forward, will probably have 240 hits this year. Does everything for the team. It's a great leader, the type of guy I would love to add to the team.
    5. I was told they aren't high on UPL at all. Probably not enough though.
6 7 8. Easy pick add and prospect.
Acciari, Foligno, Faksa, Hathaway add close to 1000 hits a season together. All are sound defensive forward. They would make our team alot harder to play against and hopefully better harder to score against.
There aren't really any young forwards posing for a roster spot yet. Kasper likely starts in the AHL. Soderblom, I feel at least, could probably use another year in the AHL to develop. Big players take longer to develop.

Petry only 2 more years and fills a hole in the roster. We have no internal options unless Tuomisto is all of a sudden ready for playing time but I doubt it. Carter is just cap and doesn't play, how contract expires after next season.
Adding any pick is still just a dart at the board. Wallinder, Johansson and Berggren are all second round picks. More second round picks looking alright in our system. Also alot of studs that come from the second round. Adding a pick is adding a pick. It can be used for trade bait or drafted.
Minnesota trade, Foligno is a great defensive forward and adds a ton of physicality and great leadership. Zadina adds 0.23ppg and plays an alright game.
Carolina trade was an agreed upon trade from Carolina fans so who knows.

Agreed, don't seem to want to spend the money to add assets to the team. They aren't poor but maybe they are limiting the spending.

Agreed with the cap restrictions, we should be good after this year for Raymond and Seider extensions. I think Raymond gets a bridge deal. I think giving more time to develop would be a good thing but they could jump into the line up if they out play who we have.

Hathaway and Acciari agreed would be good adds. Sound defensively and bring alot of physicality.
Not really any young guys pushing for a roster spot this season. Maybe Kasper and maybe Soderblom but both could be best suited with paying in Grand Rapids next year as well. Maybe whoever we draft this year, I would like to see if grab Barlow and I think he could make the team next season. If that's the case then I wouldn't sign Acciari. Foligno might be an over pay, likely could change that to a third. If Yzermam traded Zadina and he started producing it would be whatever. He didn't work in Detroit and hopefully he could produce somewhere. His ppg have decreased this season. Talking about making the rebuild super long. We are still a long way from being competitive and none of these adds would restrict the rebuild. By trading Hronek and Bertuzzi this season or kind of shows that we aren't and weren't close to being a competitive team. We have alot of holes in the roster and alot of mediocre players. I think the plan is to keep building through the draft and most of the players on the team now will be gone when we are a competitive team.
