Draft day trades

Description
That Penguins trade is just speculation. Would you consider something like that? Quality over Quantity

We saw a trade like this happen last summer between Arizona and the Sharks. Arizona traded picks 27, 34 and 45 for the 11th pick. What do the Wings need? High end talent. Wings could end up with three really good prospects from this draft. After this trade Wings would have picks 8, 17, 18.
Trades
1.
DET
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
It is rumoured that Mastrosimone isn't signing with the Wings. I hope it's not true tho.
ARI
  1. Mastrosimone, Robert [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Mastrosimone plays with Arizona State Univ. 42p in 38 games. Seems like a perfect fit.
2.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Doesn't have to be the Penguins, but if there is a team with a weak prospect pool / only few picks in the draft. Maybe this could be intriguing.
PIT
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (DET)
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (STL)
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
#17 pick to Detroit. #40, #41, #42 picks to Pittsburgh

I do like this idea of trading for another first. I would hope to gain another second though somehow. Disappointed about Mastrosimone.

Mastrosimone isn't worth that much since he will be a UFA this summer. There isn't even a compensation pick for him if he doesn't sign since he's not a former 1st rounder. This happened a few years back when Chase Priskie refused to sign with Washington

Yeah this is annoying, I think they need to change something in the rules to avoid this. If Coronato was in the same boat it would be really bad for the flames. The compensation pick will never make up for it.

What? Henry Thrun was just traded for a 3rd and he was a 4th round pick himself. Teams can still make trades, but those players can't play in the NHL. Or I'm stupidtears of joy

Or did Mastrosimone tell yzerman too late that he doesn't want to sign a contract?

You are right, they can make trades but I think I saw they can't play in the playoffs. Maybe can't play for the rest of this season as well who knows. I think teams might trade for exclusive signing rights. Arizona did with McBain.

That's a fair argument with Thrun. I don't have an exact answer to that at this point but I will look into it a bit and get back to you if I have a more concrete answer.

As far as I am aware they definitely can't play in the AHL and since the rights are be effectively being traded after the deadline in this scenario he definitely can't play in the NHL post season either. I player would have to be already under contract or the team would have to own their rights for them to play in the playoffs. The trade deadline only exists as a time in which you can acquire a player to still be playoff eligible, you can still make trades after the deadline though

Draft day picks for picks are tough to gage because it depends who's available and who wants who. I could see it but I think it's more likely detroit tried to use the 2nds to move up with the Islanders pick than just add another late 1st.

Meh, as much as I'd like three 1sts in this year's draft (and it would probably be better), I really want Willander.

His current coach at ASU said it's not likely he signs in Detroit. It happens maybe it's Detroit maybe he wants to be closer to home. Fox pitched a fit until he was traded to NYR. Petruzzelli didn't want to play in Detroit now he's in Toronto bouncing between the AHL and ECHL. Some don't like it the rule but it was done to straighten college hockey in the US and since it seems to be working I don't see it going away.

He doesn't become a UFA until August 15th so he can not have contact with the other teams until until then. That's part of the reason his coach said that, to let other teams know he is going to be available. If he was available on June 1st then the chance of him being traded is slim but August 15th is after the draft and a month and a half after the offseason begins. So being able to trade is a definite possibility and a getting a 3rd is totally plausible. Yzerman paid a 3rd to STL for the chance to sign Husso a day before he became a UFA. Being from the East Coast I assume he will want to play for and East Coast team and most of those teams could easily give up a 3rd to get a chance to sign him before August 15th.

I don't know about Arizona though would they give up a 3rd for the chance to sign him? They are behind Detroit in their rebuild. They just traded a 24yr old Chychrun for picks. Is Mastrosimone going to want sit through a longer rebuild to be able to play golf year round?

You’re right, you have to have a player you really like before you make a trade like this.

I can see them trying to take the Islanders pick and a couple 2nds and move up into the early teens like the cossa deal if someone like Reinbacker falls or if sandin-pillikka is high on their list.
