Worst possible outcome for WPG

Created by: Jobob77
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2023
Published: Mar. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a scenario that could possibly happen this summer and would be a disgusting robbery.

1. MTL Need to do a draft pick trade to acquire MTL 2024 2nd.
2. Hughes offer a RFA deal to Dubois of 4,2M for 2023-2024 + alrrady negotiate his next contract (with a small raise due to the pay cut of 2023-2024).
3. Dubois accept the RFA deal and WPG has 2 choices: a) Match the offer/keep Dubois knowing that you are not allowed to trade him for a full year when you match an RFA deal (Lose him for nothing in July 2024); b) Not match and receive MTL 2nd in 2024 as compensation.

Match stick him in the east coast league riding the buses and can his dad right before the season from coaching the moose and mess with both of there futures. Jets do have one of the richest owners, could go scorched earth if he wants too

Can you not trade offer sheeted players? This is a very easy way out for the Habs

You can’t!

From Capfriend’y offer sheet FAQ:

If the receiving club matches the Offer Sheet, they cannot trade that player for 1 year from the date of first refusal

Hughes does this and no team trades with him again

Offer sheets already dont happen because of how it makes teams feel

More likely that Dubois signs long term in WPG than this happening

Not sure he would consent! :P

A player whom consented to a Conditioning Loan can be Loaned to a minor league club for a maximum of 14 days without passing through waivers. CBA Reference 13.8

It is indeed a good point!

From what we saw with Aho/KK situation, the day of the offer sheet, everybody says that offer sheets are horrible and the GM will make enemies. However, Bergevin and Waddell did a lot of trades afterwards. GM should be mad at Brisson for publicly saying that Dubois want to play in MTL. When you have an opportunity as a GM to make your team better, you need to take it (if you play by the rules).

Chaos and drama nobody needs, but if he starts dealing in bad faith to jets and possible return, there could be some creative ways to ensure Dubois has a ****ty year, possibly hire Mike Keenan as his personal black aces conditioning coach

This concept that mtl agms latch onto may see the 2nd and think its a slam dunk to happen.

First nothing is forcing Arizona to trade their 2nd round pick and if mtl inquires Arizona would know the reason. Why would they not ask for more if they can sense that an os is possible and they are the only form of making a "cheaper os" even possible. If I'm Arizona an overpay where habs ultimately give up around what they would for a 6.3m os. Like Arizona could ask for 2nd and Farrell for the 2nd. There's no telling but they need to really be compensated for making this option open which takes away from the Low price of Dubois and may be simpler to just beat the rental offer.

You also ASSUME that Dubois who has taken 2 contracts that span 3 years that have been vastly below his market value will sign the lowest one while putting up his best season while saying he wants to maximize his earnings. He wants to cash in so why would he accept 1.8m less than his qo just not worth taking that much less when he's already most likely get his wish already (out of winnipeg and towards ufa). So him accepting may force the matter but still needs to be worth it for Dubois. Sure he'd get the matter accelerated and go to ufa if matched but this creates the same effect as jets using him as a self rental and can still be approached by 32 teams as a ufa.

Os are also a typically rare occurrence unless you're mtl. Os need to entice a team to consider the options which is why a 6.3m os while still not very likely would make the jets decide between the self rental or a 1st.

Finally with KH he has been more patient in the way he acts. If so many habs fans want him for free KH can just not make an offer and the jets trade him as a rental and hope Dubois isn't expensive as a ufa. Thus keeping all assets.

What to do: childish revenge or take the 2nd rounder and be mad at Brisson?

You are bringing all good arguments!

I also think that MTL should overpay in an ARI trade for their second. Maybe Kidney + 2nd. They have a big enough prospect pool to force ARI in a trade.

Dubois won’t cash in even if he is signing a 1 year deal with the Jets. Do you want to take a paycut now to have the option to start working on the biggest contract of your life and settle sooner?

Montreal would never do a 6,3M in a rebuilding process. Giving a possible top 10 1st is not an option. The 2nd is enticing in a way where it is a 2nd or nothing.

I would also be patient if I was KH but if you have the chance to negotiate with Brisson/Dubois earlier, you need to take it. MTL clearly have the prospect assets to make it work.

Not saying offer sheets dont happen, I do think we start to see them more. I just dont think one like this would be even considered by MTL

A OS like this is much different. PLD is a case like no other tbh, everyone knows the Jets are already F****d and if Hughes went out of his way this much to F*** them more I do truly think teams would avoid him, or any GM that does this or something similar.

Everyone knows PLD is going there when he can.

Essentially boils down to no reason to be a D**khead lmao
