If they don’t win the Bedard lottery, would they consider trading Savard?

I don’t understand why either team would do the PIT/MTL trade you’re proposing.

Care to explain the logic?

All I see is DeSmith being of very similar value as Monty. If you agree with that, then that means PIT is giving up 4 other assets for Kovacevic.

This doesn’t add up to me, or I’m missing something in this proposal.

Don’t know what’s more worrisome, the fact that you think his name is Davis or that you’re selecting him with most likely the 5-7 pick…

I don’t think Desmith is as good as Monty. I see them getting a better goalie on a cheap deal. They also get to move Rutta who they are most likely going to move on from. The entire point of what we should be doing is adding picks.

The picks are more important than who our goalie is next year.

Davis? I’m assuming you mean David Reinbacher? I must have typed as s. I think he will be a top 10 pick, much like Seider was.

Just messing around, seemed like a strange autocorrect to go from David to Davis. The other way i’d understand :P

The only thing stopping us from trading Savard, is that we need a veteran presence on the right to support our young LHD.
That need means the return would have to be high enough to warrant creating a hole. Likely a 1st or more (though that can include short term cap coming back). Anything less and it's better to keep him for development purposes.

i disagree you need a goalie to keep you in games to develop your young players in an positive atmosphere and monty is a low cap hit when we are still paying price.

Jake Allen and Casey Desmith as a tandem can do that.

According to reports, they don't wish to buy him out and his future is tied with Laviolette's. The two being at odds with each other throughout the year, as well as management's interest in Mantha's abilities, former players basically showing Laviolette lost the locker room, and Mantha's solid last season probably means they let Laviolette go and Mantha stays.

I personally would like to see him stay, but time will tell with an "aggressive" offseason on the horizon.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

DeSmith is better than Monty but older so I'd say they are a wash.

Kovy is a fine young player but Ruuta and a 4th would be a fine trade there. The 2nd and a B+ prospect are a bit of bias bleeding through I think.

If you upped the 5th to a 4th and dropped Poulin and the 2nd, it would be a fine trade.

The 2nd is what you pay to lose 2 years of Rutta. The rest is filler to make up for the 800,000 in savings. I don’t see any evidence that Desmith is better. In fact, it really points the other direction. Monty faced 1324 shots this year and saved .903 of them. Desmith faced 1142 shots with a .905 save percentage. The difference in shots faced surpasses .002 difference in save percentage.

2 years of a slightly overpaid defenseman is not worth a 2nd. Maybe a 4th or 5th.

Yeah, not a great argument for how Monty is better. The difference in shots is a bit but you can't extrapolate that if DeSmith had faced more he would have let in more goals. If anything, your stats above show they are extremely similar. Couple that with the fact that Pit's defense is probably worse than MTL and I think you could make the inference that DeSmith is slightly better.

Regardless, they are probably the same so no real benefit for Pit in the goalie exchange.

I also like how you called the Pens 2nd / 3rd best prospect "filler for salary".

Yes. Hopefully the new coach actually uses him properly.

You think we have a better defensive team? Wow, that’s certainly not true. We gave up 33 shots a game this year and you gave up 32, so neither is very good. If Poulin is one of your 3 best prospects at this point then that’s a crisis.

Yeah, Poulin being one if their best prospects is bad. They have a bottom 5 farm in the NHL.
