I think the Coyotes won the trade. Just because like sure, Smith is a decent goalie. But he's on his last legs! The man is 35 and is NOT a long-term guy for the Flames. This isn't exactly a "blockbuster" but I think the Flames should've just signed someone like Mason in the offseason and kept Johnson as the backup. Also, the conditions for that pick are weird. It's a 3rd, but if Calgary makes the playoffs it becomes a 2nd.

Calgary will sign Elliott or Mason and solidify their goaltending. Smith is not totally reliable.

They aren't re-signing Elliott. They've basically confirmed he's being traded. Also, I seriously hope they sign Mason. Smith isn't anywhere near a "beast" like some people think he is.

Exactly, Calgary will sign someone who can play 30-40 games, while Smith takes the other games.

At the end of the day, Johnson is a UFA that wants starters money, Hickey was never re signing in Calgary because of LD depth, we gave up what could be a decent pick. I'm not over the moon for the trade but I am excited!

Coyotes picked up Raanta in the deal obtaining Stepan so think they won just by getting rid of Mike Smith alone... Chad Johnson it don't matter what they do with him. I never thought Smith was a good goalie, his big year or numbers were from when Coyotes were a defensive shell type team. They had guys like Ekman playing with Yandle among others while the NHL probably owned the team giving them every break they could to help sell them to a sucker smile. Better to get some value for Smith than have to put on waivers then bury in the minors or buy him out if that is even an option. The money they saved getting rid of him helped them cover the cap hit of Stepan anyways... Raanta cost like 1M in cap hit while Smith was about 5 times that without any upside only decline left in the tank smile.

Why did some people say Coyotes won the trade? They sent their number one goaltender for NOTHING with retained salary transaction. (UFA back up goalie, unsigned prospect and a third (or second) round draft pick) are nothing for Smitty.

Most people including me thinks Coyotes won the trade by addition by subtraction. They had two goalies already even if they let Chad Johnson walk. Smith is old, had a high salary so this saved them needing to buy him out. His best numbers came when NHL probably owned the team who played a defensive shell so they were better than he is in reality. Also they got a 3rd round pick which for a goalie isn't that bad if look at what Kings got for Bishop going to Dallas or other trades. Also not many believe this will solve the issues Flames have had in net even with a good top 4-6 D-men corpse. Most expect him to be in decline or fail in the Post Season not excel. Like how Brian Elliot isn't good enough to win, Jets/Coyotes never made it to the Cup final. They had a bit of a run I think in 2012 when Kings won the Cup helped by the NHL wanting to boost them for a sale. They do things for teams who were being sold like Penguins were helped get a Cup to increase the attractiveness to buyers only to rebound again financially thanks to Super Mario again smile.
