Habs 2023 Offseason

Created by: maha573
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 14, 2023
Published: Apr. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is my mock off-season for the Montreal Canadiens this summer. These are some trades that I think are fair value, and address critical needs such as roster space. below is the list of players I would re-sign, and their contracts (sorted by highest AAV to lowest).
Forwards:
Caufield - 8x7.85
Gurianov - 1x2.9 (QO)
Monahan - 1x2.5
Harvey-Pinard - 3x2
Drouin - 2x2
Ylonen - 2x950k
Richard - 1x950k
Byron - 1x750k (If he can play, if not retire and join management)
Condotta - 1x750k
Teasdale - 1x750k
Hallander - 1x750k

Defense:
Beaudin - 1x950k

As for the draft, let's assume Montreal keeps 5th overall post-lottery and Florida's pick ends up being 17th overall. I will be picking using Tankathon's mock draft, and selecting who I would take at each pick given who's still available.
5th Overall - Zach Benson
17th Overall - Dmitri Simashev

  3. Bowey, Madison
  4. Leskinen, Otto
  5. Pezzetta, Michael
  6. Schueneman, Corey
  7. Stephens, Mitchell
  8. Tierney, Chris
Additional Details:
All of these guys would be let go in FA, but CapFriendly won't let me delete them.
2.
MTL
  1. 2025 2nd round pick (CGY)
CGY
  1. Dvorak, Christian
Additional Details:
Calgary has shown interest in Dvorak in the past. His price won't be very high, and he doesn't have a future in Montreal.
3.
MTL
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (PIT)
  2. 2025 5th round pick (LAK)
LAK
  1. Hoffman, Mike
Additional Details:
Despite what most people think, Hoffman's production this season wasn't that bad. It'll be the final year of his contract, and a contender looking to add some secondary scoring for cheap like L.A may be enticed with this offer.
4.
MTL
  1. Howard, Isaac [Reserve List]
TBL
  1. Edmundson, Joel
  2. 2023 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Tampa had serious interest in Edmundson at the TDL, but their cap constraints and Edmundson's injury prevented that from happening. Howard is a prospect that Montreal's development staff could do wonders with, but the big question will be whether or not Tampa is willing to part with the former first round draft pick.
5.
MTL
  1. Hållander, Filip
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (NJD)
PIT
  1. Allen, Jake
Additional Details:
Allen has no future in Montreal, and it's time to finally give Primeau a chance. We'll see if Monty can finally prove himself as a 1A goalie, and MTL gets a decent return.
6.
DET
  1. Xhekaj, Arber
Additional Details:
Now before you freak out, keep in mind that most fans were upset last year when Romanov was traded. Xhekaj's value has been overinflated due to his physical presence and big personality, and will likely never be higher. That's not to say that he doesn't have any skill, but I see his ceiling as a 4D, and MTL has too many of those. If they can pull off a trade similar to the Romanov/Dach one last year, and gain a project player who the development staff can work with and mold, I consider that a win.

Hoffman is the antithesis of a LA Kings player. The Kings want nothing to do with that, even at 50% retention.

Flames would look to bring back Monahan or sign Drouin via Free Agency for a song, before Trading anything for Dvorak who is not needed and has no future in CGY, so long as we have Mikael Backlund

Actually I hope CGY signs Max Domi for $3.25-3.75mil/yr

Welcome to CapFriendly! Sometimes, it's not too friendly.

Los Angeles has 12 forwards on the main roster right now who are under contract for next season, plus 4 RFAs (three of whom they are certain to re-sign), plus at least a couple of forward prospects in the AHL who will be competing for slots on the team next season, so the Kings wouldn't take up a roster slot for one season of Mike Hoffman under any circumstances. And their cap situation coupled with their primary need for help at LD and a top-level goalie would rule Hoffman out on that score, too. So without even getting into a discussion about Hoffman's on-ice value or past performance vs. the Kings' emphasis on two-way play, LA wouldn't be interested in him.

First off, you can change the year on the title screen when you make the team.
Second, Calgary can't afford Dvorak and I'm sure they aren't that interested in him anyways.
LA can't afford Hoffman, he's not a positive asset and they definitely wouldn't be interested in him.
Tampa can't afford Edmundson and they likely aren't interested in him, especially at that price.
I don't see why Pittsburgh would be interested in Allan, he's not an upgrade.
Detroit might do that trade.

value is a bit wonky but the ideas are there. for a first acgm its pretty fine, my first was absolutely awful looking back at it. you can switch the seasons when you name the team, there is a tab for a 23-24 season that automates everything.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm still trying to find my way around the website, so I appreciate you not screaming at me about trade value.

We all started somewhere.

@Dickie_Boon has the right attitude: our first efforts are likely to be cringe-worthy when revisited a year later, and some of my mistakes are cringe-worthy almost immediately.

Building on his sage advice, I'll add that you should automatically ignore any criticism that is insulting (such as "you should watch some hockey").

In what world does Montreal get an asset for a back up goalie who makes almost 4 mill for two more seasons? Come on.

Short answer is no nor can they afford Edmundson even with the retention. TBs off season is basically Colton, Jeannot and 900k> contracts filling the roster

Tampa might be interested in Edmundson, but it would require Montreal retaining half and either additional retention from a 3rd team or Tampa sending back Fleury or someone similar to make the cap work.
