To buy out Bobby you’re essentially saving 3.33 against the cap, not much for the fact then you pay 1.6 for the rest so in the end you’re hurting yourself down the line. Wouldn’t it be much more cost effective to retain 50% of his salary and move him?

You're right. Just to clarify, there is a an immediate 3.33. cap saving for three years. Then the Panthers have to get a replacement at let's say even 1m, so the cap saving is just 2.33 for three years
But he is a tough trade even at the maximum 50% retention. Teams might feel they can get just a good a goalie as a UFA for 5m or less.

I know it's a rather minor move, but why would a team trade any pick for the RFA rights to an established replacement-level player? Particularly when those rights include a QO that's higher than the salary he should be paid.

Okay, but equivalent or better players are always available as UFAs and can often be had for under 1mil. That's my point. Unless they have a particular hard-on for White, there's no reason to give up assets for a player of his level in the offseason. At the deadline, sure, but not in the offseason.

It was rumored they were looking for a taker this past off-season, and even 50% retained, no one was interested.

However, contracts have expired, the landscape has shifted, and the Canes could use a veteran with a few years left to tutor their young Russian goalie.

yeah the main reason for the buyout is that there are zero takers. similar to how the canes picked up burns for cheap

Yes, but there are a lot of goalies coming off contract this off-season whereas last year, I don't recall there being much movement in the UFA market for goalies, everyone was rather locked in to what they had. This year at 50% for a bag of pucks you might be able to offload him. Carolina especially seems like a good fit as they love distressed assets with term for cheap, and they have an opening with Andersen and Raanta coming off the books, and I think they look to move on from both of them due to injury history. Bob on the other hand has stayed largely healthy.

I think the Jackets can get better offers for Roslovic especially at 50% retention. If not, then they should just keep him until at least the trade deadline.
