Does this work for both teams

Created by: jonh514

Initial Creation Date: Apr. 21, 2023

Description
Matheson trade was a mistake. Poor player evaluation on the part of a bad management team. He is worth a 1st more or less on his own, though maybe not this high in this draft.

Allen & Evans are an improvement on no one and Carter

It's not perfect but both teams get a player they need

Alright.

Love Matheson just dont think it's worth it for us to give up that 1st with so many unknowns about the team right now

Pretty poor deal for MTL. Healthy Matheson can get 55+ points, which is worth much more than a mid round pick and a washed old player

Have you ever looked into how many 1st round picks play over 200 games in the NHL ?
7 % .. thats SEVEN % ... of those most are drafted in the top 5.
Mid range first round pick is usually a 3rd liner.
You think its a good idea to trade an established 1st pairing Dman for that ....

Ya your math is waaaaaaay off. It might be 7 percent over the full 7 rounds but 7 percent of 32 is 2.24

Probably not - because Carter won't waive unfortunately. That contract is just one of the worst things ever created

Don't think this would work for the Habs. Matheson has established himself as a true first pairing defenseman and a fan favorite in Montreal this season. He's probably the one vet the Habs will keep building their young defense around. Hughes would surely like to add another 1st, but not at the price of Evans, Matheson and Allen. The later two could presumably fetch a nicer return than a 1st + capdump by themselves, at the deadline.

right. If Monahan was a 1st with him as the dump for nothing, this does not make sense for the habs

Some of my fellow Habs fans seem to think Matheson will be too old once our window to compete opens. If that's the case you have to get value for him at one point. Might as well load up now so more assets are maturing right as that window opens.

I think Matheson is probably worth the Pittsburgh 1st and the Allen & Evans deals create cap flexibility in 2023 & 2024. It's not a great value deal sure, but we get to move on from Allen and make room for Primeau or another Goalie we pickup on waivers.

If the goal is not to compete next year... Then why do we care?

I don't think Matheson is worth more than a mid 1st round pick in this ultra deep draft, but that's not a comment on his ability, it's a comment on the draft. If you are drafting Reinbacher or ASP with this pick, you are trading your present for an equivalent talent in the future.

I see where your coming from but Reinbacher will be top 10, and Matheson is probably be better than ASP will ever be

Based on 1/2 of 1 season. I mean... He may be a 55+ pts defender next season, but he has never been one yet

I personally disagree with that notion about Matheson. In order to develop guys like Guhle, Harris, Barron, Xhekaj (and eventually Hutson, Engstrom, Struble) the right way, you need to sit them in the correct chairs. Keeping Matheson allows just that. Matheson will be 32 in his final year, and at $4.875m (with a salary cap rumored to increase a lot in two years), he should be easily tradeable for a good return then. I know he's not the same age as the others mentioned previously, but you can't have a team full of players the same age...who are going to be looking for new contract all at the same time. You need balance on that front too. By trading Matheson later on (in the final year of his contract) for a pick, you're not only allowing your current young players to grow properly, you also ensure to build the pipeline with more young players, once the first batch will be looking for higher contracts.

Trading Allen, I have no problem with. I'd have no problem going into next season with a Montembeault/Primeau tandem, and with Primeau being waiver illigible next year, trading Allen could be one of the thing Hughes is looking to do. Evans on the other hand, is in a much different situation. He gives us flexibility down the middle to trade Dvorak and/or not resigning Monahan, and although he had a tough year, I don't see his $1.7m contract for the next two years as a problem. Quite the opposite.

We're not trying to win. That, I agree. But we are trying to build a fondation for our young guys to thrive in and develop. Matheson, to me, is a key part of that. Gallagher, we'll have to live with. So the pieces that could be shipped out are Dvorak, Armia, Edmundson and Allen. Hoffman, I think, will get bought out. And I have to put a asterix on Anderson, because of his M-NTC.

it seemed low to me .. quick verification shows you're correct but the point still remains. Taking a quick look, the first round looks like its is close to 70% avg . play 200 + NHL games but most are 3rd or 4th liners. Back half of the 1st round you get mostly Jared McCanns, Ryan Poehlings, Kapanens, Scherbak and the occasional Pastrnak. I would never trade an above average NHLer ( top 4 D or top 6 F ) for a late 1st rounder unless i had to
