We're talking about 60 games vs 9 games at the nhl level though. Which do you think im going to lean heavily towards? Even if I buy that hes got untapped potential, thats not really a risk the Sabres can afford to take on at this point.

I'm not saying they should take him.

My point is that he is a 23 year old who has had 40/60 games in one season where he was bad (the other 20 he was average to good) and 9/9 games in another season where he was really good. He has a total of 105 games played. To call him terrible is insulting.

Idk where you got that breakdown from. I see he's played 123 games. His rookie season, 48 GP, he's mediocre. Average XGF, well below average XGA, but this happens to almost every rookie d-man so its whatever. His next season, 66 games played, it's a train wreck. His 9 games this year, pretty good apparently.

Im not really sure what else Im supposed to take away from that. The majority of this sample is that he's not good. Does it mean he cant be good in the future? no, absolutely not. But im not sure why it would be insulting to say its been terrible so far unless you want to reveal at this time that your last name is Smith (yes relation).

This team is going to be young regardless of which guys they add on the margins. All their core players are young, theres no working around that. Its more valuable for them to gain experience together than try and manufacture it by adding a bunch of old dudes who arent all that good.

And age/experience are two different things. Dahlin may be young, but hes played 355 games, alex tuch has playesd 379. These guys have been around.

Gaining experience is only good if its "good" experience. They have very little succesful veteran experience on the team. Little details like cheating when the ref isnt looking, preparing for 82 games and a post season, knowing habits of guys in the league, playing in and against different nhl coaches and systems. Having experience is more than age but its also more than games played.
That being said adding a bunch of "old dudes who arent any good" doesnt help anyone, but to think the young core will learn just because they're playing more games isnt correct either. We need "old dudes" who can give us a stable and consistent 12 minutes a night, crush penalty kills, support lockeroom leadership, and encourage young players developement through mentorship. Our coaching staff is new at this too don't forget. So having a vet who can fill out the last 15% of knowledge that your experience may never teach you can make a huge difference.

The Dickinson move seems fair and reasonable for a TDL move.

Went unclaimed on waivers. Can we say he's closer to that now?

To terrible? No. If he stays in the AHL for two more seasons then fails to make that team and has to play overseas and THEN fails to make that team, you can call him terrible. He is still better at hockey than 99% of the planet. Now, if he never makes the NHL, you can call him terrible by NHL standards but that is a high bar and I'm not ready to write off a 23 yo who might get there. He is by no means terrible or a bust yet.

BTW, I just saw your previous post (somehow I missed it). I did laugh at the last bit. I am not related to Ty Smith. Though I am his father's, brother's, nephew's, cousin's, former roommate.
