Why wouldn't a team want him as a full year rental and use a pick this year to make it happen when they know exactly what pick they give up? Seems to me that Dubois is going out for the best return and to qualify as that something is going to be advantageous to jets ie 2023 first or a top prospect.
Because most of the teams that would be interested in acquiring Dubois as a rental, even for a complete year (aka the contending teams) either...
a) ...don't have a pick in the 2023 draft, because they've traded it already
b) ...are up against the cap, making it a lot more difficult for them to absorb Dubois' contract before the deadline
or
c) ...have their 1st round pick at the end of the round.
Bascially, you're not looking at a 31-team market here. Most teams won't mortage their future for a year of Dubois, only the contenders will. Teams like Boston, Tampa, Dallas, New Jersey, Edmonton, Florida, Los Angeles, Ottawa don't have a 2023 1st to trade. Teams like New York, Vegas, Colorado, Minnesota, Toronto are already pressed against the cap, some with other holes to fill. You're probably looking at a 4-5 teams list, max, all of them drafting in the mid-20's. Out of those teams, some have other needs than a forward (ie. Carolina and Pittsburgh, who should be in the market for a new starter).
Most teams that a) have a 1st round pick to trade and b) aren't pressed against the cap...are rebuilding teams. Teams that would have NO reason to trade for Dubois as a one-year rental.
