littlejerry. Not that I disagree with you about the Sabres finishing third.....(I am big supporter of the Sabres in rest of this decade), but who do think the playoff teams will be in the Atlantic next season?.

Probably have to offer better than that for Ehlers.

No shot they finish 3rd in the alantic.

We were 7 points out with echl level goaltending for most of the year. Power, Quinn, peterka, Krebs all played their 1st full season and we are now in mittelstadt mode.

I mean if we even have average goaltending how many points do we add?

Teams ahead of us have cap and/or old age issues

Good question. No idea, I would assume toronto is 1 of them, depends on alot of factors

Looks like the Atlantic is going to very close in the coming years. Boston and Tampa fading, partly due to cap reasons. Leafs might lose some of their stars, Sabres/Wings have prospects and cap. Sens and Habs should be better too. Might look like the MLB American League East.

As you pointed out, we are retaining one of those ECHL goaltenders.

Average goaltending (50th percentile among starters/guys with 30 GP or more) this year added roughly 2 wins above replacement. That'd get them in the Wild Card assuming other teams around there decide to not get better this off season for whatever reason.

I mean, I mentioned cap and age issues specifically.

I also mentioned how several players on our team were only playing their first nhl season. That essentially includes both goalies.

I also added a top 6 forward.

Stands to reason improvements will come from within. Unless you think owen power, jack Quinn, jj peterka etc will never improve from their rookie seasons.

cap issues are overblown. Teams always find others who will bail them out. Its a pipe dream to think either boston or TB will miss the playoffs outright cause of a retirement or trading a 3rd liner for cap reasons.

Florida and Ottawa will be healthy. The Habs will get PLD. I expect some players to improve, some to regress and some to do about the same. Overall they probably contend for a wild card spot.

I didnt factor in Ehlers cause I dont think its happening but with him they can probably be WC1

Teams don't always get better. I don't see Tampa getting better for example. In fact toronto, Florida and Tampa all had worse regular seasons than just last year

I am being optimistic and specifically stated the reasons why. It's the offseason.

We contended for a wildcard spot this year and we're one inch of tuch being offside vs Florida from making the playoffs.

I think we improve more than other teams. You disagree, oh well
Stadel liked this.

Both wild cards come out of the Atlantic next year, calling it now. The Sabres do not need another small skilled winger. They need some bottom 6 help and a D to pair with Power not named Jokiharju. Their 5, 6, and 7th D for next season should be Jokiharju, Lyubushkin, and Stillman.

Our bottom 6 is fine. 6 ft tall isn't small

Also, this lineup including the press box players total 3 players under 6 foot and 2 of them are 5'11"

6' is a number, his style of play is a small skilled winger. They already have those players. They need players to help on their PK.

I can see Boston, Tampa coasting once they secure playoff spot, regardless of seeding. Panthers are no better than Sabres now. Sens, Sabres and Wings are coming.

So Toronto would be 1st. 2nd and 3rd, along with wildcards are up for grabs.

He's just a good hockey player. You can't just throw words together.

They need a better pk system. Players like Krebs and Quinn became trusted Pkers. Along with cozens, tuch, okposo etc. Part of development, the kids learn defense. Not all about points.

Uhh they are exactly 2 rounds better than the Sabres (Panthers). Its actually a really good team that is one year removed from a presidents trophy. Again, a cap crunch doesnt just turn 100 point teams into wild card or non playoff teams. Those teams will still have their core, which drives most of their success.

Lol, they literally just went from presidents trophy to wild card. They were 1 point better than us. Teams get better and teams get worse every year. I think Buffalo gets better to the tune of coming in third, which if you look at this year would mean 7 points better.

Florida blew up their team BECAUSE of cap issues

Florida didnt blow up their team, they added one of the best players in the NHL. I dont dispute that teams can get better or worse, but the Sabres arent going to take a division spot just cause some teams around them have some cap issues.

Unless they make serious changes, they'll be competing for the same spot they did this year, on account of having roughly the same roster.

Which I stated will be improved as we iced rookies in several key roles.

I believe Quinn, Power, Krebs, Peterka and the goalies will improve. Not just point production, but defensively

I believe Boston and Tampa will be worse than last year. I believe Florida will be about the same or slightly better.

I think the team I put together improves to say 101 points.

You are free to disagree. I have explained why I feel the way I do.

So have I. I was originally responding to someone else. It's a lot to expect all those guys to take major steps forward. We know first hand that a young players development is far from linear.

"3rd in Atlantic" does not take playoffs into consideration. I think Boston and Tampa will get worse. Toronto stays put. Rest of the field were like couple points off each other, with Sabres being prime candidate for biggest progress.

Being primed =/= progress. Gotta see what they do in the summer first. Their being close to a wildcard spot because everyone around was mid shouldnt fool anyone that they dont need major changes to the roster to compete.

Also worth noting they had favourable injury luck all year long.
