Different cap clearing ideas

Created by: Blenchers
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 24, 2023
Published: May 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming Pearson's hand recovers, no OEL buyout and we aren't able to move off of Boeser, Beauvillier or Garland. I think this is the most likely scenario, I don't see anyone doing us a favour. That leaves Demko as our best tradeable player.

We bet on Hoglander with a long term deal. BC-born Reimer signed short term as a stopgap.

We're left with a quality prospect at each position (LW/C/RW/LD/RD/G) to cook in Abbotsford/be available for callup when needed.

1.
VAN
  1. Søgaard, Mads
  2. Thomson, Lassi
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (OTT)
OTT
  1. Demko, Thatcher
  2. 2023 4th round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Sens finally stabilize in net and are ready to push for a playoff spot. Should still have space to re-sign DeBrincat, other young forwards locked up, D of Chabot, Chychrun, Sanderson, Zub, Bernard-Docker, with Demko cost-controlled for several more years.

Sogaard is an Ian Clark special, Canucks bet on him to produce another NHL tender, get another young RHD prospect and get back in the 2nd round in 2024. Silovs cooks for another year in a #1 AHL role in case Sogaard doesn't pan out.
2.
NSH
  1. Rathbone, Jack
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Talented young puckmover in Rathbone gets a change of scenery.

Preds get off of a 3-year cap commitment and another pick for their rebuild. Maybe they want him around in a mentor role.

Canucks get the RHC they've been looking for, a BC native and some sandpaper.
3.
ARI
  1. Myers, Tyler
Additional Details:
Straight swap, late summer after Myers' bonus is paid.

After that, Myers' 23-24 salary is $1m so Arizona saves $1.5m in real cash.

Canucks save $3.5m in cap for 23-24.

Tell Myers he's riding the bus in the AHL if he doesn't waive his NMC.

Canucks aren’t trading Demko for that. It would take a huge overpay to get him. Their asking price was a 1st, blue chip prospect, and Raty level prospect

I think the Canucks are keeping Demko. If we are moving Demko to OTT then we have to get back Pinto otherwise its not worth it.

I would not trade Demko. He is too young and imexperienced to get a great return and he could be elite.

So you want to clear cap huh? Hmm. If only there were a PPG player on a big contract who other teams will want but is going to be a gigantic drain on the roster in 3 - 4 years.... hmmm.

Can't think of anyone. Guess I'll grab a beer. It's Miller time!

Ottawa does not have enough cap space for Demko.

Your trade benefits no one.

Canucks have to be keeping Demko. If the team wants to be competing for playoffs asap. Without Demko this year we were around 6th worst team in the league. Trading Demko is not very smart unless we are doing a tear it down rebuild.

He will turn 28 this year. How is that young, let alone "too young"?

Because he's a goalie. Most don't hit their prime until late 20s and can play until their late 30s.

The average age of a starting goalie in the NHL now is a little over 29 with a standard deviation of nearly 4.

The average age of a NHL position player is 28 with a standard deviation of around 1.3

For a goalie, he is young. For every Ottinger, Hart, and Skinner there is a Bobrovsky, Fleury, and Quick.

Goalies have different rules.

So demko is essentially average aged, not young or too young.

Thanks for agreeing with me

The Canucks bottom 5 team next year with out Demko. There's been no indication that the Canucks are trying to tank next year. I get you're trying something different but it'd be like trading Petey to save cap space. Trade a 2nd with mysie before dumping demmer

I mean we were a bottom 5 team this year with Demko for a long stretch...

Look at the playoffs. None of the top teams remaining have elite starters, save for Dallas. What they do have is an excellent top 4 defense to create an environment in which their goalie doesn't have to be superhuman every night. I love Demmer but I'm not interested in watching us run the same **** defense back every year and hoping Demko can bail us out.

That’s reportedly what their asking price was at the deadline

You could find a few GMs, desperate to keep their jobs, who think Miller will save them and at least keep them from getting fired for a few more seasons.
