ANA
  1. MacDermid, Kurtis
  2. 2025 5th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Cant pay almost 1M for a guy the coaches don't trust in a playoff game. Offers versatility for regular season, but would rather give the younger guys a chance during the season.
2.
COL
  1. Roslovic, Jack ($2,000,000 retained)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (LAK)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (CBJ)
CBJ
  1. Toews, Devon
Additional Details:
Have seen a lot of interenst from CBJ mocks for a LHD. Believe either Toews or Girard will be moved for a mid-6 forward to help improve depth behind the top line. Trade could just as easily be Girard if Toews gets an extension that works with expected future cap hit for Rantanen. Pick may be heavy with salary retention.

I mean, CBJ would accept this without skipping a beat. I have concerns about his extension fitting in our cap picture because he's signing a post-30 extension and I imagine Jarmo would want a 5 year contract. That being said, this cost is well worth him even as a rental. I don't think you're going to live Rosie as a C that much but in this environment he could be unlocked.

I think it's a massive undervaluation of Toews.

Went back and forth on adding in the LA Kings 1st rounder, but thought that might be a bit much since Toews is a rental. Ideally, Newhook would realize his potential as a 2C next year. But either would be well insulated by Landy and Val (if they are back).

I think Jarmo would do this deal with the 1st even as a rental. I don't think there are better defenseman who fit the picture and are worth the 1st. Ekholm, McCabe, Chychrun all already moved and are unlikely to again. Provorov works but I don't like the human. Hanifin is the same as Toews but is also a pending UFA. His extension is probably cheaper but I think you take the better player with a 1st.

Toews is the prototype for how we want defenseman to play. Toews is exactly the model for Svozil and Mateychuk as lefties but also Boqvist, Ceulemans and Jiricek on the right. I secretly hope we hire Rand Pecknold as an assistant and having Toews reuinited with him could help us produce magic.

All being said I feel like the AVs try very hard to move Girard before they consider Toews.

Depends on what Toews wants for an extension. Girard is cost controlled at a good price for a few more years. If Toews is willing to take something team friendly-ish to stay with this core for a few more cup runs, then I'd move on to trading Girard as part of a package for a cheap 2/3C.

Added the LAK 1st rounder and swapped Newhook and Rosie as 2/3C. Believe Newhook was the original plan for the eventual 2C when they decided on Val over Kadri. ERod could also slide in as 2C if Newy and Rosie don't work with Val/Landy.

I understand where the thought comes from, with all the ELC's expiring we need to shed some salary from d. I don't think newhook is near 2C capabilities yet, and this pretty much is a repeat of last year with weaker defense.

I don't think Newy has showed anything close to deserve 2C yet either. But there aren't many options out there that would fit if Landy is healthy enough to come off LTIR. Atleast not without severely limiting the options for the bottom 6.

Personally would be fine running it back with the cap staying flat. If either Landy or Val was available, we are likely still playing right now. And Dallas hasn't impressed against Seattle either, so we are talking about running it back with a team that lost 450+ man games and was in a position that the WCF wouldn't be unreasonable.

Landy confirmed out for the year. ROR reunion with the added cap space. Contract estimate from STL-Dispatch article this winter - similar to Giroux contract.
