Two of the Four gone

Created by: KoneDome
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 8, 2023
Published: May 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
One or two of the four have to go:
Nylander: its not supposed to fall on him. He makes far less than the others, which also arguably makes him more valuable. He's least responsible for the failures, but also not part of the solution.
Tavares: Not who he once was, and requires protection (in form of keeping Matthews). His contract also makes him unmovable.
Matthews: Needs to be dragged into the fight by a new set of teammates and coaches. Also needs to stay to protect Tavares.
Marner: The one to go. Probably for his own good as well. I have no doubt he can turn it around somewhere else away from the spotlight and with solid leadership.

cant say that i disagree and dont know how to fix it. I like your idea like the team but matthews is a problem if he was a leader Marner would listen and so would the rest. trading all 3 would look bad but maybe it does need to be done. i dont see an easy solution. im will to see your idea out.

VAN should do that and flip Nylander at the deadline.

For triple what it cost to get him. What a horrible horrible trade for TO.

I think the moves are good ideas but I think you aren't getting enough back in the trades

These are so so so bad. All you did was pick up 2 bad contracts and a mediocre prospect. While gutting this teams skill. This team is so much worse than what we have.

I would be very surprised if they let Marner go unless it's for another superstare in a 1 for 1 or 2 for 1 deal. If anyone, it's mostly Nylander or Matthews or both who get traded. I

First off, you can basically consider Tavares gone or take him out of the equation because even if he is re-signed, it would be as a role player and/or a team friendly deal. His trade protection+cap hit+age basically eliminates the chance of a trade. So, that leaves you with Matthews, Nylander, and Marner really.

You probably picked Marner as he has no trade protection but considering that he's very effective on both sides of the ice, even strength and on special teams, replacing him in terms of roles might not be all that simple. You might have picked Marner, since you're satisfied with what Knies brings but there's still a lot that is unknown about him and his fit in the roster.

If Matthews extends, I don't seem them shipping off Marner+Nylander or just Marner since the first case just leaves them with Matthews in the long-term and the other option is plausible but I think Matthews+Marner are seen as more of a duo vs Matthews+Nylander.

If Matthews requests a trade or agrees to a trade then the decision is basically made already.

If Matthews doesn't commit to a new deal or request a trade, then the only safe bet would be to trade Nylander since there's the possibility that Matthews just walks. Nylander's own contract situation would be relevant.

Blues pass. We have no cap space for Marner let alone adding Murray to the trade. Plus we won't pay Marner what he wants on his next contract

Blues should take that. Mitch looks like a weiner but he is easily the best player in that trade and would be st louis' best player if he went there. Crushed everyone in points and is a selke finalist, but hey parayko had an ok year

Marner is far too expensive, especially as a winger, which is the last position the Blues need to splurge for. Robertson is of zero interest and Murray is of very high negative interest. The Blues cannot come anywhere near affording this, and it creates waaaaaaaay more huge problems than it solves, which is none.

Lets overlook that we have wingers in spades right now, and have quite possibly the most mismatched defense ever assemebeled. But hey we have 4m in cap space for next season may as well make a trade that has us taking on an extra 9.5m in cap all while creating a bigger hole on defense.

as for OP " I have no doubt he can turn it around somewhere else away from the spotlight and with solid leadership." Blues have virtually no leadership
