Blockbuster with the Flames

Created by: Pensfan303
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2023
Published: May 11, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-- Dubas is hired as GM after Toronto lets him walk due to a poor 2nd round performance.

-- Todd Reirden and Andy Chiodo are Fired due to the poor PP and Goaltending.

-- Zucker re-signs at 4-5 years at 4.5mi per, he takes term over short term money to stay in Pittsburgh. He could make a tad more, however I wouldn't give him anything over 5 mil per.

-- Jarry is brought back on a short term, prove it deal. After a injury riddled season, Jarry bets on himself on a 2 year prove it deal in order to try and cash in big in what will be his final big contract after this one.

-- Pens take the L on Granlund and buy him out. The Buy out saves us 4mil this season and costs us 900k against the cap. He will then cost us 1.9 mil per season for the next 3.

-- Dubas brings in familiar faces in FA.

- Bunting brings a great two-way game and a scoring touch to the foward core that Granlund simply did not bring at all. Bunting can also play up and down the lineup which is something Sullivan values alot. He comes in at a price tag of 4mil for 6 years which does bring its risk, but he will be worth it. Another option would be Tyler Bertuzzi however, he is injury prone and would come in at a bigger AAV than Bunting.

- Noel Acciary is brought in to bring a physical presence to the bottom 6, but more importantly, a right handed center option to replace Jeff Carter. Sully values Carter simply because he's a right shot center who is good on the draw. So you bring in Acciari and it makes Carter useless and hopefully allows Sully to finally move Carter to the press box.

-- Alex Nylander and Ty Smith get a shot to earn full time jobs in the NHL.

- Alex Nylander gets the shot to play with Sid and Guentzel, the best position for him to succeed, If he fails to produce with both of them, we will officially know he isn't made for the NHL and we will move on from him.

- Ty Smith gets the 3rd pair role and a 2nd PP role as he looks to be a full timer this season with Dumo leaving.

- If any of them fail to make an impact and earn a full time role, the Pens would still be left with 1.8 mil plus the 800k or so from the player contract to go out and find a replacement for them which is something we did not have for most of last season.

Hanifin is a very good TWD who would improve our defense big time. With the pens defense being kinda Iffy, they look to add a proven top 4 dmen who fits Sullivan's system pretty well in my opinion. Moreso than POJ who would be the odd man out for me

Pens are in a win now mode while Sid, Geno and Letang are still producing, The future doesn't matter as we will suck either way, Might as well try and win one last cup for the core.

Sullivan was also an advocat to go out and get Chychrun last season, So this season, he gets help in a different form.

is #14 too much or not enough for Hanifin? LMK
I feel like it's fair value as the Flames look to re-tool and pens look to go all in for 1 last cup

Rutta signing was not usefull last season and id simply rather see Friedman get a full time shot on the 3rd pair. Flames take him back for cap reason and because they will most likely need another RD if stetcher walks

Every flames fan will say they can get more for Hanifin. Honestly, it would come down to who else is offering and what's left on the board draft day. I would guess another pick would be involved.

Calgary won't be selling before they can discuss extensions first so the draft will have already happened

This and I don’t think they’d trade him until after free agency. Free agency has quite a few really good defensemen which would lower Hanifin’s value until after they all sign and Calgary can find a desperate team.

There are plenty of good top 4 LHD and top 4 D in general I’m free agency. There really isn’t a need to give up assets to a team for one that would be a pending UFA and likely cost more cap wise in extension than the players you can pick up in free agency.

That would assume you want to extend everyone. Dressing the same team as last year isn't wise. Nor is resigning guys in their 30s to long term extensions. Hanifin and Lindholm are a bit younger than the lot, but if a top 15 pick is on the table, they are going to listen.

I mostly disagree with you here for a few reasons.
1. Team went through a complete retool last summer that resulted in a major lack of familiarity and synergy. Discombobulated would ve the best way to describe the team last year.
2. Line consistency was a huge problem. The only things that stayed relatively constant all year were Lindholm - Toffoli, Backlund - Coleman, and the defense.
3. The constant favoring of veterans over young guys ready to make the jump hurt us a lot.
4. The system though effective at shot suppression and shot quantity was horrible for shot quality. Some of the vest things we saw last year were when Huberdeau made some wicked passes for very high quality chances but due to pairing with guys like Ritchie or Lucic it resulted in wasted effort.

I don't think the team shpuld make many changes at all before free agency opens up and extension negotiations become legal. Especially with either of Hanifin or Lindholm. I would maybe be open to Tanev or Toffoli being dealt at the draft for the right price but other than that no. I think a coaching change van go a long way and unless the new GM decides to blow it up I think trading a core player off for pick 14 is silly. That prospect will have little to no impact on the team for 2-3 years

I really like the hanifin trade idea, however I still think you need to improve that third pairing... why trading poj and not smith? my third pairing would be poj - mayfield (if he takes 2m contract)

and would you feel good to try for a cup with that goaltending tandem... not sure

Your four points are all valid. I would say that none of them are greater than the fact that Gudreau is consistently a better playmaker than Huberdeau, and Tkatchuk was irreplaceable as a finisher. Florida's success this year is largely evident of that. BT made the best of that situation without a doubt. Calgary's modus operandi has always been to just plug and patch the perceived holes in the team as opposed to building through the draft. We have 8 more years of Huberdeau and Weegar and 7 more years of Kadri. Every year past 28, players get slower and production declines. Extending players well into their 30s isn't good cap management or asset management. Every team diludes themselves into thinking "this player is different" but the reality is that most players (even the great ones) decline past 28, and even the ones that do maintain a decent level of production usually are not worth their relative GAR/AAV value at any given position. In two years, we could be lamenting how we didn't draft a given player who is now a top line center. This is a historically deep draft. Short of Lindholm (who we should resign unless we are rebuilding), any and all players should be up for grabs to get capital in this draft. Because in 2 years, we will still be stuck with these aging contracts. San Jose is a perfect example of this mismanagement. Dallas and St Louis have done a much better job of keeping their pipelines padded to supplement their aging cores. Hanifin isn't untouchable IMO. If we get the chance to draft high or take a player like Marner (however unlikely), then Calgary should do it. They need at least 3 elite players in their prime to go anywhere in the post season. I'm really hoping wolf turns out to be one of those players.
