Toews and O'Reilly have similar play styles and roles. Wouldn't make sense to have both of them.

You've disrespected those UFAs by thinking they will sign for so little. Fiala isn't waiving his NMC to replace Matthews. Kings don't do the trade either, they can wait for Matthews

That is a lot for a rental, if Matthews wants to sign an extension in LA we'll just get him next year when Kopitars contract is done.

Its not a rental as part of the trade he signs a 8 year extension. If LA does not make the move they risk him being traded to another team.

Because you know Fialas motivation? Not if he is moved and extended to another team. or even just extended by the Leafs

The Price for Matthews would be high.

Bringing in Toews as your 4th line center does not hurt and they still have Almost $8M to spend on other players or trades

Not as high as Connor McDavid.

There's not a single player in the league that I would trade all 4 of those assets for.

I would agree McDavid would be higher but History shows what the value of AM34 would be on the market and I don't think its that far off what I listed

Everyone on this board is much smarter than most NHL GMs

I'd challenge you to show me a player over the age of 25 that was traded for a haul anywhere close to what you have here.

Extended by the Leafs?? He has a full six years left on his current NMC contract. I don't know Fiala's motivation, but you don't even know his contract.

What do you think AM34 is worth?

The Extension part was about AM34 being extended by the Leafs. IF he was available this summer LA would need to make an offer if they wanted him as any deal would most likely include an extension and would be gone to another team

and since you don't know what Fiala would do your comment about what he is willing to do is irrelevant.

Trade him, he'll be a rental and go to the highest bidder which he was already going to do anyways. The Kings would rather keep that future than leverage everything to be another top-heavy team.

What do you think AM34 is worth?

Erik Karlsson: The first round pick is there, but which of the prospects that were traded are equivalent to either of Byfield or Clarke? And where is San Jose's single best PPG player going back the other way?

Ryan O'Reilly: Again, the first is there even though in this case it was essentially a 2nd (#31 overall). Tage Thompson worked out great for Buffalo in hindsight, but at the time there was no indication that he was going to be a superstar. Sobotka and Bergland were both dumps. O'Reilly was also locked up long-term to a very team friendly contract, which is absolutely not the case with Matthews.

Matthew Tkachuk: Huberdeau and Weegar are both great players, but both only had 1-year remaining on their contracts and Florida probably couldn't afford to re-sign them anyway.

So if we're using any of those trades as comparables, then at best you get the 1st round pick and only one of the three other assets you have listed here, along with two lesser pieces like Spence and ****emo.

However, i still contend that the Kings will just pass on the trade and try to sign him in free agency. If he wants to sign in LA, he will. If he doesn't he won't. He'll have his pick of team and contract, and there's no reason why he'd let Toronto pick where he's going to play the rest of his career just because that team is willing to give up the best haul.

Exactly this.

TML fans have got to lower their expectations of how a Mathews trade will look.

If he gets traded it’s 99% a pure rental situation. No team is giving them anywhere near this trade.
