realistic pens offseason

Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 11, 2023
Published: May 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Penguins aren't going to rebuild with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Guentzel on the team. After missing the playoffs for the first time since the mid 2000s, I see them doing an aggressive retool for one last competitive stretch with the core four still on the roster.

OTT
  1. Carter, Jeff
  2. 2024 4th round pick (PIT)
2.
PIT
  1. Yamamoto, Kailer
  2. 2023 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
clears cap for EDM, gives yamamoto a change a scenery after some tough seasons
EDM
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
gives PIT some more young talent on the roster, buying low on yamamoto hoping he rebounds
3.
PIT
  1. 2023 7th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Blackhawks bank on Granlund having a decent season playing with Bedard, look to trade him in the future
CHI
  1. Granlund, Mikael
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:

4.
PIT
  1. 2023 4th round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
DET is the only team that can even afford Petry. Their D needs some work and (maybe) Petry can help...
DET
  1. Petry, Jeff
Additional Details:
Detroit took some steps forward this season and their offseason moves in '22 showed that they're ready to compete. Petry might be willing to waive the NMC to play on his hometown team and help them make the playoffs. Mainly sheds some cap for PIT as they look to get younger and faster.
5.
PIT
  1. Karlsson, Erik ($2,500,000 retained)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Sharks finally commit to a rebuild. They get a decent haul, taking a flyer on Smith who's yet to prove himself. Don't see them retaining more than 2.5mil of Karlsson's contract since they already have a fair amount of dead cap for the next few years.
SJS
  1. Pettersson, Marcus
  2. Smith, Ty
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (NJD)
  4. 2024 1st round pick (PIT)
  5. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
  6. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Unprotected 2024 1st, 2025 2nd becomes a 1st if the Pens make the ECF in '24 or '25 with Karlsson playing in at least 50% of their playoff OR regular season games.

Aside from Smith, (who I'm not even sure PIT is super high on), the Penguins keep their few good young prospects (Poulin, Pickering, Blomqvist, Hallander). Gives them a great chance to compete for a cup with the current core still playing some good hockey.

You said it yourself. Detroit is the only team that can even afford Petry, why are we giving assets for him?

Explain why OTT does this? If trading Joseph, it will be to clear out cap space. Not take on another Million

We'll give you Mathieu Joseph for that 4th round pick.

Taking on Jeff Carter will cost you more.

And Carter is not waiving his NMC.

Try again.

mainly just wanted the joseph brothers on the same team, ottawa could use more veteran guys since they're still a pretty young team. maybe pens retain 50% and shed a few hundred thousand somewhere else.

though pittsburgh's mostly trading him to shed cap space, petry's still serviceable. he can help detroit make the playoffs and if they're out of the playoff picture by the deadline they can easily flip him for more than what it cost them.

DET is the only team that can even afford Petry. Their D needs some work and (maybe) Petry can help...

A few things about that. Petry doesn't get Detroit to the playoffs. He helps Pittsburgh by not being on the team more than he helps the Wings being on the team. He also take a big chunk of salary for 2 more seasons. Within weeks of the playoffs the Wings and Pens were neck and neck for a wildcard spot. You stated there is no rebuild, yet you are trying to pawn him off to make your team better? Detroit being on the rise wants their competition's cast away that isn't good enough for them to compete? And you need to be compensated for the one sided help?

It makes more sense if you are still competing for the big three to keep a good 2RHD. If he is too expensive and a luxury you can't afford, try selling him to a a team that needs him for a purpose first. Detroit gains nothing with Petry for two years, and therefore is a cap dump to them. Not saying the player is, but to Detroit there is no to very limited benefit.

I don't really see Detroit being a playoff team next year unless they take huge leaps. We could likely sign a UFA in Schenn, Clifton or Mayfield and keep the pick, even though it is a minor one. Also Detroit won't be able to trade him as his trade protection, which is why you are trading him to Detroit in the first place and not some other random team, will keep him here. Also to get a return, if he were to accept a trade away from his home town team, we would have to use a retention slot for two years to what? Get a fourth back or maybe a third? Just no incentive for Detroit to help the Penguins here. I'm not totally against a Petry to Detroit trade or just has to be in our favour, considerably so.

I cannot help but feel like you're really fudging on the word "realistic" here. To put it mildly.

fair enough, seeing petry play for his hometown team would be a pretty neat end to his career.

i mean aside from the karlsson trade (who the pens would probably heavily pursue if they had the cap space), i could personally see most of these trades happening, even if some people aren't sold on the returns in some deals. aside from a team not getting enough back for a cap dump are there any moves you vehemently disagree with? joseph hasn't been as good as he was when the sens traded for him, oilers don't love yamamoto and want to shed cap, petry's from DET so he might be willing to waive, chicago needs guys to play alongside bedard, sharks want to get a decent return for karlsson after a historic season and the pens want to go on at least a few more deep runs.

I get it Petry is from Detroit but if they wanted him he never would've been traded to Pittsburgh. Yes Detroit needs an RHD but there are a lot of other options out there. Last year Yzerman filled holes almost exclusively with UFAs he used a single 3rd round pick to get Husso. Someone will offer Bertuzzi $6M.

Sharks are likely to trade Karlsson this off-season.
This isn’t the deal though, last thing the sharks need are 2 more LD in an already overly crowded side, take both out add a young RD and a cap dump and this looks more lodgical.

That being said even if this was a possibility remember how Karlsson was on the sharks with another stud #1 RD! He stunk and that easily could happen with Letang in Pit. I would be cautious. He is best when he is the clear #1

Okay, well...

- Carter isn't waiving to Ottawa
- Your Granlund ask is incredibly optimistic
- Detroit presumably won't want Petry, let alone pay for him
- You're asking an awful lot of retention with EK, but offer quantity over quality

The Edmonton trade is probably realistic. The rest not so much. Plus, you expect to be able to land six UFAs of varying note, all for dirt cheap. So yeah, gonna need to reel in those expectations.

I like Granlund, but don't think CHI should be taking on those sort of deals without getting paid properly and PIT aren't exactly in a position to be doling out 2nds or more to move that sort of cap though unfortunately thats the hard line teams with Cap space take in the league.

I have a few issues with calling this a realistic offseason. There's a 0% chance of the Ottawa trade happening. Rejected by both sides. Detroit says no - you'd probably have to retain half to have a shot. And highly doubt that SJS trade goes through - wouldn't consider that realistic.

Outside of those trades - I'm not sure why we're signing 35 year old Nick Bonino to play over DOC? And you have 6 RHD on the roster - 2 of them playing on their off side. Plus Bertuzzi probably needs more

I don't think that offer is going to pry Yamamoto out of Edmonton. Not sure where you got "a couple of tough seasons" from, last year he scored 20 goals and 41 points while rarely playing on the powerplay. This year he had several injuries that slowed him down, but I don't think the injuries have affected his value all the way down to a 4th round pick.

Hawks decline. Not enough to take his contract. And if the Hawks want to play an aging veteran w/ Bedard they already have one on their roster - Tyler Johnson.
