Or they just pick the easiest selection they had in years and take whoever falls to #5, yes picking Michkov is a NO BRAINER

My guess is bedard/fantilli/carlsson, then next 3 could go any which way, cost to get to 3, not sure it’s worth In the difference of those three players, 5 is a interesting spot, if michkov is there, does somebody try to get up ahead of Arizona or do you just go best player available even if it’s a few seasons away.

I do not disagree with taking Michkov at #5 at all. I was just talking about what it might take to move up if Montreal wanted to do so.

I wonder about the (very few) people that propose Montreal takes Reinbacher at #5 because they "need a RHD". I have seen Reinbacher NHL comparisons ranging from Brett Pesce to Colton Parayko to Ryan McDonagh to Shea Theodore. Meanwhile a Michkov comparison is Patrick Kane. I cannot understand how you would switch out Kane's career for any of those guys. It seems not even close to me.

HIstory shows that this is an overpay.

Both 1sts for their 1st and a late pick should do it

According to the data based on an article released last year, the pick value of 4th is 100 and the value of 5th is 90. To make up the difference it only costs about the 52nd pick (mid 2nd round). I would say that if you were to offer the 5th and 37th picks you could get to 4th easily and that would be considered an overpayment. However there will be users here that will try to convince you that it would take a lot more than that but it's just not true. Also seeing as Michkov is likely to be the pick at 5th he is viewed as the better player in the long run so the Sharks wouldn't even be downgrading in talent to move back

I truly think Montreal is better off keeping the 5th overall pick and drafting whoever SJ/CBJ didn't take. Keep your additional picks, you'll get an elite talent at 5th Overall AND have an additional first rounder from Florida in a deep deep draft.

If I’m Montreal my goal is 3 key elc players going forward for their nucleus, need 2 to add to top 6 and possibly an eventual number 1 dman and or goalie. Depends where the Florida pick falls but would probably be looking to upgrade it too grab that possible number 1 dman or possible number Center depending on if a Center or winger at 5, possibly best goalie in the draft at that 2nd rounder or something you haven’t picked earlier. Ideally I pick at 5 ahead of coyotes and find my way up to 11 and pick ahead of the coyotes again, because they are basically in a similar boat to being able to gamble on best player available without a ton of pressure.

Just a friendly reminder that MANY lists still have Benson over Smith.
So if it does in fact go Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson...who's to say SJ wouldn't pick Benson at 4 if they aren't interested in Michkov ?

Right now, I'm staying put.

Lol easily? How could possibly think you know that? Maybe the book says it would only be a 2nd, but if I'm sharks GM I'm not going by the book lol. If you want to move up and convince me to not take the player I want and risk you taking him, I better be getting something that I value. 37th pick? Meh.

In the later rounds or even late 1st round you can think of it like that (trade downs happen every year there) but not in the top 5 when there are perceived tiers of elite players

I think SJS deal is possible because I don't think they specifically want to draft a Center.

I think Columbus needs to get a Center, so Dach would probably need to be a part of the deal and that's a non-starter for me.

IMO Dach could be better than Carlsson throughout his career. We never know until it's all said and done.

why pay more for the third pick when the player you get is no better than the 4th pick... it is a crapshoot as to whether Smith or clarksson is better.. and i dont think the habs would care so the third is far too expensive so you dont trade for it.... and you get whoever is left... however this trade would only get done at the last minute because someone might pick the russian earlier and then you dont need to trade.

most likely would be arizona because of all their draft capital and if they really want the russian because their arena wont be ready soon anyway so they could afford to wait....so they have the 6th pick and other assets which montreal would prefer... but of course you wait to make sure clarksson and smith are gone before you make the trade. and it would cost another first round to move up for sure.

For the Jackets to fall back another 2 spots it better blow the minds of the owner and fans or else Jarmo gets canned before he walks up to the podium to make his pick. Recent news is Michkov may be stuck until 2028 now as a recent report said the Sochi owners are planning to blackmail him into staying. Which isn't surprising based on what happened to his dad.

I don't see Columbus entertaining moving down. That would be a PR nightmare with a fanbase who's already furious enough over the handling of the lottery. Jarmo and JD are both on record stating they're taking a center with their first pick, and they won't risk having fewer choices available for that selection by moving down two spots. I can't speak for San Jose so maybe there's a deal there for you, but I don't see Jarmo and JD going for one.

Depends if SJ wants Mich or not. I think it's a yes if they do. But I think they will want a big center, one of Smith or Carlsson. I doubt they trade their pick

I have been hearing that the Canadians DO NOT want to risk it with Michkov, it may not be true but I read a report that they are not interested in gambling on him with everything that is going on over there. This would lead me to believe he will be on the board at 6.

Still not a bad spot, they should spread a rumour that Arizona is all in on picking michkov if he’s there and up the package for 5

Sorry, but if I’m Columbus and you want 3, I want an impact player for next season, I think I can get that at 3 with Fantilli or Carlsson. Who ever I get a 5 or later won’t be NHL ready.

If you want 3rd OA we don’t want more picks, we’d just want Suzuki, who can be our 1c for the next 7-10 years otherwise Columbus really isn’t interested it trading 3rd OA.

Arizona paid the 14th and 45th picks in 2019 to move up to the 11th spot and that was considered an overpayment l for moving up 4 spots. Moving up a single spot in the same prospect teir is not that costly. Now if a team in the 10 range wanted to move to 4th that is an entirely different story

Jarmo was just on the radio saying if someone offered a 25 year old or younger 1C that they could sign for 8 years then he'd listen on the 3rd OA. So you're looking at minimum Suzuki to get the pick from Columbus.
