DAL
  1. Olofsson, Victor ($2,375,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Why Dallas? From what I see, adding Olofsson to their 3rd line makes it a more like a 2nd line. Marchment-Johnston-Olofsson is pretty dynamic; and quite similar to running Dadanov on that line down the stretch in 22-23. Dallas can defend, and with this deal, can role 3 lines that can score.

Bonus: with only one year left in the deal, Stars leave room.for Bourque and/or Stankoven in 24-25; something they likely would not be able to do via UFA - being getting a player of Olofsson's calibre on a one year deal under $2.5 million.
BUF
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
The kids are coming. Let's start there.

Secondly, I am taking a direction of shoring up the defensive capabilities of the bottom 6...... this really has been an issue in Buffalo in 22-23. Simply put, Olofsson doesn't do that.

Sabres have more than enough fire power to move on from Olofsson, so for me loosing that 20-25 goals is a non-issue (Quinn, Peterka, Krebs all should get better and make that up).

Olofsson can play but I see a player that simply doesn't fit the team any longer. This is about fit not ability.

I never really considered Dallas as an option for Olofsson, but it actually makes some sense. Buffalo should be all over that, it's a solid return without needing to take a contract back.

LOL a Leaf's fan finds the perfect landing spot for Olofsson good job my friend.
Victor is very under rated.
Only 23 forwards scored faster than his 1.6 goals/60, and only 55 forwards scored more than his 28 goals.
Last time I checked there were 32 NHL teams with 3 players on each top line for a total of 96 top line forwards.
"adding Olofsson to their 3rd line makes it a more like a 2nd line. Marchment-Johnston-Olofsson is pretty dynamic"
He will find an open space no matter who are his line mates as he scored a goal in each of the last two games of the season with Girgensons and Okposo as his line mates.

With the Stars already without a 1st this year and a 2025 2nd, I'm not sure Nill trades another top-62 pick. More often than not, he's really clingy with his draft picks. His 2nd Round picks have landed him Robertson, Hintz, and Stankoven in recent years. Not sure he parts with another one here. If a trade like this were to happen, it would likely be for a prospect (or two)

I like it because he's not in the Core longterm and it opens a spot for Kulich or Rosen.

You do realize I it is a 2024 2nd in this deal right?

I do. I’m saying that Nill’s going to be hard pressed to trade a top-64 pick in 3 straight drafts. That’s why I don’t see him doing anything with either the 24 1st or the 24 2nd during the offseason. If he moves either pick, I’d anticipate being more at the 2023-2024 trade deadline.

I think Olofsson is a fine target, but I think Nill would be more likely to trade a prospect than a 1st or 2nd round pick at this stage.

Fair point.

But the allure of adding Olofsson should intrigue him.

If the Sabres opted the propect route, I have to say the ask would be a defenseman, which 3 would fit the bill.... Grushnikov, Kyrou or Fegeras. Even there, there is a debate to be has in adding a late pick.

Grushnikov was the first one that came to mind when I was typing my comment. I really like him, but with Heiskanen, Harley, Lindell, and Bichsel all either on the roster or headed that way, I don't know where he'd fit. Kyrou's is probably off limits due to the scarcity at RD and him being our top RD prospect, but Grushnikov or Fegaras should bother be options, should the Sabres decide to go this route.

Typically "a hockey trade" involves hockey players going both ways. And why is BUF retaining salary on an already cheap 28-goal scorer?

I'm seeing lots of Olofsson for a 2nd round pick deals. Give me an actual player/prospect. We have enough picks already. I'll take one of the young D-men mentioned above.

Because this salary does not matter to them. VO on 2,3m cap hit is worth more, and easier to trade.

As for "hockey trade", sure, but I see that as VO being replaced from within - Kulich or Savoie.
