That doesn’t even get Demko, let alone Miller as well

That might get you Miller. Demko would be worth at least that again.

The problem with Demko is twofold.

He is too raw to fully understand if he is great or not. As such, Van would be taking a big risk in trading him away and the buying team would be taking a big risk in acquiring him. Most GMs avoid that kind of risk so that would be hard to overcome.

The second problem is that Van has no one behind Demko. So they would have to get another trade or FA. That might anger Petterson and they would be in a bad situation with their best player.

Also, Petterson is worth more than a 2nd.

Miller is worth a low 1st and a B+ prospect. His play and production would warrent more but his contract removes much.

The offer above would be a massive overpay for just Miller. He likely isn't worth much more than 14 overall.

A PPG centre is worth more then a mediocore prospect and a late first

Not when he is signed through his age 37 season to 8MM per year. That contract will age like milk in the Sun.

The worst part of that contract will be when the cap shoots up a ton, making it much less bad then it would be with say todays cap.

I have heard that argument and perhaps you are correct. But there are two issues.

The first is I am not convinced it will go up. The US is tilting towards a recession which is bad for attendance sports such as hockey.

The second is that even if it goes up by a bunch, guys will want more money. It would be a shame if Petterson wanted a big raise in 2 years and Van either couldn't keep him or couldn't build around him because Miller was eating 8MM to play on the 2nd or 3rd line.

1. The cap is going to go up do to the new NHL deals, after that it will still likely increase even if the US goes into recession.

2. They'll want more but the cost of Millers value will go down. As contract values as a whole go up, the cost of Millers will go down. Say he is a 50-60 point guy in 5 years. There is a chance that that type of player could be making near (I highly doubt exactly) what Miller would be making

The GM willing to take that risk is crazy. Also Vancouver is the one desperate for cap space and teams know it. Their players lose value on that alone. No team is going to pay to help Vancouver out of their cap crunch.

1.) Well no. That's not how economics works. If we hit a recession and people stop going to games and cutting cable, revenue goes down. If it goes down, owners aren't going to just lose piles of money. Very few owners are willing to run a team at a loss.

2.) I don't think Miller will be a 40 - 50 point guy in 5 years. I think he will be a 50 point guy in 2 - 3 years. I think he'll be an oft-injured 3rd liner in 5 years, scoring maybe 25 points in his 45 games. You could be correct, on his future but as a Van fan, I'm not hopeful. I don't think a 25 point, 45 games guy will cost 8MM.

I think there will be a despite GM who is on the hot seat and needs Miller now, regardless of the future.

I want no part of Miller’s awful contract and his awful attitude. Demko maybe but don’t want to put all our hopes on him…
Also since when is Pettersson a cap dump?

Petterson has been a healthy scratch several times this season. He’s soft and gets pushed around when the games matter. I’d much rather see the Pens go after some dmen who are tougher to play against (Graves, Guda’s, etc). A 2nd seems fair.

Team needs to get younger but near impossible to trade/sign good young players.

Probably in a fairly similar spot as this season. The team comp seems pretty similar to me.

Not sure why we're moving the guy who's only ever played C to wing so we can put the guy who plays wing at C? Carter doesn't waive and I highly doubt that ARI trade happens - I would think both sides reject
