OTT declines, also worth mentioning Marner is up in another year after next, what’s the gurantee he stays in OTT? Exactly, none.

Oh, and they’re gonna risk losing their young promising 23 year old winger who’s just starting to amp up his stride?

Yea no

Maybe they want more offense so they have a better chance at making the playoffs. Teams can change direction, and even move on from their captains after disappointing seasons.

As proposals go, it's not the most illogical scenario for a Tavares / Avalanche theory. Even though he's 33, Tavares would help fill the offensive production void that Landeskog provided and, with the retention, the Avs can use the LTIR relief from Landeskog missing next season to cover the first year of Tavares' remaining contract. As a captain and center, Tavares makes sense for the leadership qualities that Landeskog provided and plays a position that would replace the center ice depth that Colorado lost behind MacKinnon last summer when Kadri left (and will continue if Compher leaves this summer).

I don't think Girard would be the piece going back to Leafs though, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Toews and them already yielding a 1st round pick. I wonder if the RFA rights to Newhook may be a more realistic complement to the pick since he seems to have worn out his time in Colorado and the Leafs would need to somehow reinforce their center corps if Tavares is dealt.

Newhook hasn't worn out his time in Colorado? Where did you get that from? He's very much still in the plan.

As for Tavares to Colorado, I just don't see it. Even with retention, he makes too much money. And I don't see him waiving anyway, so it's probably a moot point.

Ottawa will let you have Tkachuk if you're willing to give up Marner, Reilly and Samsonov for him

Keith, maybe, but not Brady.

Brady is the prototypical playoff player you want. He's big, can score, plays a hard game, and drags his team into a fight. And his deal is amazing.

Marner is a great regular season player who disappears in the playoffs and because of that, gets paid too much. Reilly is yet another LD, which Ottawa has plenty of already. Samsonov is decent, but is unsigned, and there are better options available via FA or trade.

As said above, Brady is as untouchable as it gets, even with an "overpayment"

Why would the Sens give up their captain who is one of the best power forwards in the league who is signed for 5 more years for some regular season performer every Sens fan loves to hate.

Sens need to make the playoffs. Marner will help a lot.

the points difference between the two players simply doesn't remotely cover for the off-ice differences and importance to the team and culture. that's not even to mention that Marner is on a more expensive, soon-to-expire deal, while Tkachuk is overperforming his contract with several years remaining on it. no world where the Sens do it

No as well, for the reasons in the quote below

I'd trade you DeBrincat for Brodie + Järnkrok + 2nd

And a bad one for Ottawa because they 0% can afford it (which team can take 14 M$ additional cap just like that? lol)

Marner is one of the best playmakers out there and a good 2-way forward (I wouldn't say Selke level though, despite the nomination) but he makes close to 11 M$ and only has 2 years left. Not the kind of contract the Sens want/need with their core starting to enter their prime

Rielly contract is also unattractive for Ottawa. He's good now but is 29 y/o and has a whooping 7 years left at a high salary (7.5 AAV). That contract has high potential to be problematic in the middle of the Sens competitive window

Can find another goalie, Forsberg has been had on waivers and has been better the last 2 seasons overall

Not according to many of the league "insiders" and media in Colorado. Newhook's inability to take the next step seems to have put him in that gray area where the Avs may move on from him if the right deal comes along.

Really? If given the chance to go from a team that flounders in the playoffs every season to a team one year removed from a Cup championship, you don't think he'd waive - especially after a hypothetical request from Toronto management would signal he's no longer wanted/needed there?

The retention aspect is the most likely dealkiller.....
