Why would Timo Meier go to the Habs given where they are?

Lmfao “he walks.” He’s an RFA only thing he’s walking to is Fitzgeralds office and signing an extension.

Offer Sheet... Canadian fans should know this well considering how they lost Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

A world like this when a rebuilding team like the Sens, Sabers, or Montreal decided that 9.5m per for 7 years is a good idea for Timo because I can not see your management matching that

I’m pretty sure the offer sheet would cost 4 1st round picks.. plus this years sooo yeah that isn’t happening. Even after draft day are the habs really risking another high 1st rounder in 24 plus 3 more following that? Answer: no.

I think you need to look at your salary cap situation? New Jersey has about $32,400,000 to Montreals $8,400,000 so New Jersey has far more money to offer Timo Meier than the Habs do.

I didn't say it was a smart idea... I asked why Timo would move and they said money

I agree... I just don't think that him to the Devils for the long term is a done deal

While that may be true, Habs have 20 man on that roster with that capspace, while NJD only has 12. Now I'm not saying it would be a good idea for the Habs to throw that kind of money to Meier (because I don't), but "projected cap space" doesn't tell the whole story here.

Wouldn't include this year's as the offer sheet can't happen until July 1 so there is that. Still would be hilarious if they did it though.

How does he “walk”?

Devils options…

1. Extend him
2. Trade him
3. Take him to arbitration
4. Qualify him
5. Let him walk

Meier’s options…

1. Play for team he wants to play for (~$68m)
2. Play for team he doesn’t want to play for (~$66.5m)

NJ has to qualify Meier @ $10M to retain his rights prior to an offer sheet. He might sign an offer sheet for a little less money and more term, but he'll still be in the 4x1st category regardless. I'd say he's pretty safe from an offer sheet because nobody is doing that.

That's up to Meier. NJ's only control is qualifying him @ $10M.
He can take that and leave his options open for next year's projected cap bump.
Is NJ willing to commit $10M (or close to it) long term to him?
He hasn't been worth anywhere near that commitment in NJ to date.

NJD can take him to arbitration in the first window, which would block any offer sheet. And it would lock him into a 1-year deal below $10m. We would have to wait until after January to lock him up long-term, but it is an option.

Also keep in mind that he wanted to be here. Over the all-star break, he vacationed with devils players in Mexico. And the conversations with him and his agent before the trade gave enough confidence to our GM that he made the deal without an extension at deadline.

I would be generally surprised if they do not come to an agreement.

I think a long term deal is likely, but there's a good chance it is not cap friendly. He'll be looking for more than his performance since the trade justifies.
That may be where there's an impasse. He can take his $10M for this season and go to the highest bidder when teams have a little more cash to throw around.

Club elected arbitration still provides opportunity for an offer sheet (5 days I think, with the way the deadlines work out).
You also don't take that step if you are hoping to keep a player long term.
Like I said though, an offer sheet is very unlikely. Nobody thinks Meier is worth 4x 1sts and that's what a contract would take.

Expect something similar to Filip Forsberg’s $8.5m x 8 years. I am not too worried. Bratt will be the trickier one (who I believe may end up with less term).
