Why is Monty not good enough

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2023
Published: May 16, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Monty is currently the starter for Canada at the IIHF world championships. Of all the Canadian goalies available, he's the one who they selected. That is not a small praise.

I will also add that his play last year probably robbed us of a top 3 pick in this draft, since we probably would have finished close to the bottom with Allen starting all the games.

He's a really good goalie (not Elite, but good) and he's affordable and just entering his prime.

Rather than giving up any assets to acquire a Hart for example, who has not proven anything, let's let Monty be Monty and see where he can take us. I would give him a 3x3 extension tomorrow if he would accept it.

Carlsson is 100% going either 3 or 4 but your point makes sense

I like Monty but there are defenitly some holes in his games and risks to offering him a 3x3.

We dont want to end up in a Cal Petersson or Alex Nedlkjovic situation

You're right that it's not the point of this post, but am actually thinking:

CBJ prefer the center who actually played center this past season in Smith. Best player available is Michkov, but they will be drafting by organizational need.

SJS, who are going to go deep in their rebuild, will draft BPA, Michkov. He's so much more offensively gifted than Carlsson, so he can be a cornerstone piece of a deep rebuild.

That leaves the Habs with Carlsson by default. I'm ok with any of the 3, but I see it going down like this.

I see it, but if Carlsson falls to four, hes a perfect fit for SJS. I also think if they don't want Carlsson, other teams would be calling in immediately, hes too good to let fall to five. A team like Arizona could come in from 6 and SJS could still get Michkov

Can you put those holes into words and express when specifically he let the Habs down this past season?

Even if he ends up being a 1B to an eventual Dobes or Hrabal, it'll be fine.

Anything to avoid another 17% cap goalie situation.

Why would you assume SJS would prefer Carlsson to Michkov. I was thinking the Habs would pass on Michkov at 5 a few days ago, but now I am all turned around. I think they draft BPA at 5 regardless.

Michkov will be 4th, Smith 2nd or 3rd and then Carlsson 5th. Even Fantilli 2nd or 3rd is starting to be a reality. Smith is a surprise.

my take on Monty is that this is a down time for high end Canadian goalies. A lot of guys are coming off long runs, injuries or would rather see their families than go to a Euro tourny for free. The top 3 out of 4 goalies have cups or a gold medal(or both) and this is usually a team that brings in up and coming goalies like Pickard, Thompson and such. If Monty preforms well in this tourny, I would use it more of an indication that he is well suited for Euro leagues rather than he is nhl starter ready.
Edit: so rather than Monty being targeted, he was available. Not nothing, but its not like they picked him over Binnington, Fluery, Kuemper, Hart or Jarry

Appreciate your perspective. He had a pretty good year this season though, especially considering the quality and experience of the players in front of him.

I would give him the mantle of starter next season and see what he can do with it

I'm rooting for him. It takes a lot for me to write off a goalie and I should add that I have a bigger problem with the Habs defense than Monty's ability. Monty with reliable 6 in front of him could be a whole other story.
