Debrincat for Gibson

Created by: ek65
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2023
Published: May 16, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Need a Top goalie more than we need a goal scorer.

Swapping DeBrincat for Gibson gives us some major help in goalie, and cap space to sign a player like Connor Brown to fill the middle six spot while Grieg/Pinto keep developing.

Idk if Gibson is good enough to justify moving Cat. Would need a guy like Iafallo on the 2nd line to replace him

The way I see it, We had a full year without Norris, and our offense was more than good enough, so if we trade DeBrincat, we can fill his role with a middle sixer or give a kid a shot

If we can replace Cat and Joseph with Helly and Iafallo/similar 2 way player , then I’m all in

I think Verbeek would have to at least consider this. But I think you’re right in saying Gibson wouldn’t accept this

He has also said he wants to add size which Cat doesn’t do

I wouldn't trade for a goalie who hasn't been good for a full season in 5 years.

Gibson is a change of scenery candidate who likely wouldn't return as much as you'd think, unfortunately.

F off with the "he hasn't been good in 5 years" crap, he was an all-star a year ago, you don't send bad goalies to the all-star game. He has a 0.924 going into the all-star break before Verbeek decided to sell. When he believes the team can do something in front of him he plays up to his abilities.

Plus we have similar guys in Zegras and Terry — we need power forwards to fill in the other slots

Alright, let's try something else:

Batherson + Ostapchuk + Sogaard for Gibson?

Established top 6 guy, big body prospect in Ostapchuk ( projects as a good 3rd liner as his floor) and Sogaard as a goalie prospect?

I've heard the comparable of Gibson to someone like Murray that the Sens just offloaded - a shockingly similar contract as well.

I do think Gibson has more in the tank though. If the Sens want to acquire a solid goalie this summer, it's really between Gibson, Vejmelka, Saaros IMO. Would do the above deal for any of those guys

What makes you say he wouldn't accept it? Doesn't want Canada, or wants to be with a team that's farther along and firmly in the playoffs?

That's exactly the way I see it. Replace Debrincat with a middle 6 player and fill in the holes we have in depth and add a true #1 goalie such as Hellebuyck, Hart, Hill, Saros.

If we re-sign debrincat Im afraid well be very top heavy, our depth will struggle and we won't have the cash to pay for a #1 Goalie.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of having 4 forwards earning ~8 million, especially with Chabot and eventually Sanderson + Chychyrun's next contracts, that could mean 56 million spent on 4 forwards and 3 D.

If we are trying to make the playoffs next year and beyond, we are so much closer to that goal by acquiring a goalie than with keeping DeBrincat and signing a UFA/pushing Sogaard too early.

Right. I did say, hasn't been good for a whole season. I don't care if he says F it after the all-star break, his overall season numbers are bad if his overall season numbers are bad.

Also as I said, he needs a change of scenery. Ana isn't going to compete in the next few years. Sell, sell, sell.
