Moving on from Marner

Description
Some team out there is itchy to speed up their contending years, has got a stock of forwards in the early 20s who are good bets to break out & have a play style/mindset better suited to the playoffs, plus a promising someday first/second-pair defenseman or first round pick. I’d suggest LA, but this trade will have to happen before Matthews extends, and we can’t have him following his friend out west… Let Matthews play with his childhood hero till his and Nylander’s extensions kick in.

    Doesn’t need to be Buffalo, just a placeholder. Idea is Marner goes for a 21-23yo forward who’s tracking to be a top-line contributor, plus another useful piece, and the cap space gets reallocated over 2-3 pieces that are useful in the playoffs.

    Kane doesn't want to play for a Canadian team, he turned down the chance to play for the Oilers at the TDL.

    Also Matthews knows that he's a 60 goal scorer playing with Marner, playing with Nylander he's a 40 goal scorer.

    Matthews will **** block any trades of Marner this summer, until Mitch gets his NMC after the UFA season opens up.

    Then I think Leafs have to trade Marner at the draft and try to repair the relationship with Matthews after.

    Matthews walks away in UFA with the trade of Marner.

    Nylander has a MNTC so you can get Matthews to agree to his extension than shop Nylander.

    You won't have that option with Marner, as I seriously doubt Matthews resigns until both his and Marner's NMC kicks in.

    So basically you want to trade and older more expensive Marner with less control for a younger, cheaper Marner with list of control, plus another piece. Got it.

    If Matthews and Marner are essentially a package deal, you will not be able to move either of them. I can’t imagine there are too many teams itching to spend $23 million on two players, if they even could.
