Vegas likely doesn't have cap or desire for only year of Guentzel. If the Leafs are in sell mode, yea they might retain.

It depends on the route they are going to take but I personally wouldn't mind. Thatd mean no Roy though 😕

What if Guentzel agreed to an extension? Although cap still might be an issue

I'm not big believer in 'extension talk" Here's why. The Pens management tells Guentzel. "We want your ass outta town, so hurry up and sign an extension so we can trade you to the Leafs. Oh if don't want to resign just to be traded, you certainly are welcome back into the Pens family next season."
If the Leafs are sellers of the their top cap players, I don't think they should spending the cap on aging players who want long term contracts into their mid thirties.

Gotta cough up more compensation if you're trying to offload Carter. Start with at least a 2nd.

I mean for 1 year with all that cap space If I was Detroit I'd do it. You basically get free picks tbh. Carter doesnt mess up your cap situation as he will be gone after the year. Am I making sense or no. Idk it was just a thought. That's usually where my mind goes when you have a lot of space. For people with 2 or more years left Its different but if it's one year and your getting a 3rd to take a player who maybe you dont exactly want but provides depth and can play when injuries occur. That's just my opinion though and I understand why you would want more compensation.

That return for Jake is weak. Roy is a pretty average 3rd line center. Pens can easily sign one of those or trade for one without wasting a top end goal scorer.

I find Roy to be pretty underrated. He looked extremely good against Edmonton.

I'd put it this way: would I rather have Jeff Carter taking up both a roster spot and millions in cap space? Or would I rather give someone like Marco Kasper a good chance to make the team? Just because we have some spaxe doesn't mean we have to use it. Marc Staal cost a second several years ago, and imo Carter is a larger negative and the Wings have less need for warm bodies than they did when they took Marc. So it would cost at least as much if not more
