ARZ which has 21 picks in the first 3 rounds: do they want someone young-ish for now, someone to bridge the gap while their current crop of youngsters and oodles of picks come to develop? Not just scrubs but a couple of young-ish (25 and 27) signed longterm who have some talent?
Hayes at 5.5m for 3 years is a solid playmaker for a team with young wings, (his production is definitely in line with 5.5mil) needing a passer, for bemstrom (appears to be odd man out, but still young with upside), aprobable late in the round 3rd TWO drafts away and a 4th THREE drafts away?
DeAngelo has a monster 21-22 year on a good club, had 40+ pts on a bad team, and SEA needs a bit more of a puck rusher/pt producer on defense, picks are pretty meh, and TDA probably carries that value to TDL if it doesn;t work out.
Zadina is young and an expiring 1.8 RFA who hasnt put it together as yet, DET gets a 2024 1st for the lowest of their 3 2023 2nds
Seeler is probably worth a late 3rd/4th at this point, hes got good metrics, solid fit in TB and picks are pretty meh
Petersen is pure negative value, with TWO years left, cost a bit of retention and Spence (who is LAs second best RD prospect) for a further into his development LD. At 4mil, even if PHI decides Errson is ready, the AHL hit is just under 3mil (for LA, its 4mil if they kept him)
Solid defense, giving Provorov that needed steady RD and Attard a steady LD vet, with York having sa stay at home partner. Spence and Andrae given time to develop and 2024 draft is loaded with dmen.
PHI has alot of RWs currently, with just Gautheir, Desnoyers at LW a year off. They lack RD and C prospects, Bemstrom/Zadina/Atkinson/Konevckny all play RW-LW, provides more balance, although it is reliant on frost to continue as a 2C and sliding Cates and Laughton back to 3C and 4C. Leaves good cap space, lots of kids playing, half of team under 25 yrs old.
Between age, expected decline, and the current state of the salary cap, you aren’t moving Hayes without more retention. To anybody, frankly.
I’d say his cap hit needs to get to about $4.5M. I’d be willing to add Bean or Roslovic to the deal. It balances the cap balance a bit, and at least gives PHI some young lottery tickets/ clears out CBJ roster spots at positions where we are flush with guys.

Somewhat agree, Hayes is just 31 yrs old so deterioration probably wont be a cliff and the package NYI gave up for expiring UFA Horvat (a not dissimlar production example) at 28 yrs old was huge, and then he signed to an older age than Hayes for 8mil. Hayes at 31 yrs old, at 5 or 5.5mil has some value, and if PHI retains more I think they get compansated, maybe not from CBJ, but a 45+ pt guy for 5mil is going rate. Maybe Bean or Roslovic instead of Bemstrom, but ideally the picks are weak at best, with Bemstrom being the best piece coming back, and a 4mil, expiring Roslovic doesn;t get more retention or lower picks, probably the opposite..
And I think CBJ with the career loss of Voracek, needs a playmaker, and the above offer is pretty weak compared to most Ive seen on here from CBJ fans
I would do all of those deals except giving away out 2024 1st. Not interested in giving away 1st round picks for basically anything
Thanks.
Zadina intrigues me: hes just 23 yrs old, a low risk/high reward, hes got almost every element a top 6 guy needs-just not put together consistently, he plays RW or LW, and its a 2023 2nd around 40th and Zadina for a 2024 pick around 18th-25th.
Sure, maybe a bit could be added, but I like the idea of bemstrom/Zadina playing RW-LW and seeing them for a year if one of them could be a nice top 6 or top 9 passing pt producer on a team full of shooters. Gautheir on LW probably arrives the year after, with atkinson soon gone, so its a good chance to see them audition for that weak LW.

Yeah I get it for sure but the 2024 draft is supposed to be stacked on D and we all know how bad we need to restructure our D so two 1st round picks means we hopefully will hit on 1 of them at least

If you are measuring purely on PPG, OK you can make a connection to Hayes and Horvat; but, Horvat also had/has a better history of two-way play (rememebr when he was hyped as a future perennial Selke candidate early in his career) which distinguishes their value. Not to mention, no one (not named Lou) is exactly celebrating the Horvat contract as a great signing to begin with. Plus, making the comparison of a TDL rental/ overpay for Horvat when he is at the top of his game (a la Hayes' UFA trade) is not the same as a trade for Hayes on a bloated, dissapointing contract with term left. It's like trying to compare JT Miller's trade value last TDL versus now, for example.
Not sure I'd make the comparison to Voracek either, who led CBJ in scoring his first year and had a much better offensive track record. CBJ mainly just need decent bodies at C, and Hayes friendship with JG (and Rick Nash) makes for a natural fit in a market where Hayes' contract is largely untradeable, and also limited by a modest NTC.
“Groundwork” was laid out between Columbus and Philadelphia regarding a Kevin Hayes trade for this summer. It’s likely that the Flyers would retain ~33% of his salary. The return is not expected to be “anything monumental.”David Pagnotta (H/T @CBJ_Opinions) | #CBJ
