REBUILD -BEDARD lets debate this

Created by: basicallyyakupov
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 18, 2023
Published: May 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Competitive Rebuild

Dismantle the core. Lower the cap hit.
Sign UFA depth slight overpay to fill roster. (max 3 year contracts to keep cap room for when bedard exits entry level contract)
Tavares leads team, takes league minimum after 2 years. (will need to first line for first year, struggle, but next year Tage or Conor takes over; play the Mario Lemieux mentor role)

Team goal is just to make play off for experience, but expected early exit (same results with Core 3 anyways who cares)

Pray that our Finish defensive prospects enter the roster within the next 3 years.
Use cap room to be aggressive with short term contracts in FA.

Max Domi would be ecstatic to join the Leafs and fit into a role utility player.
Pair Bedard with Reaves for protection. (McSorley to Gretzky)

Overall strategy, rebuild/tool into a cap headroom team.
2 steps back, 1 step forward short term, position to be leaps ahead long term.

Expect to win Stanley Cup by year 7 from now.

Have lots of cap room to make moves or sign UFA.

Still ???? for a top Left winger. Not sure who is available on market so left it blank for now, enough cap to fill however.

Sabres aren't trading tage on what is possibly going to be the best contract in the league for two rentals.

Both teams say no, they aren't giving up their young players for potentially rentals that are older and more expensive

Not only do both trades get laughed at, having John Tavares as a 1st line Centre is asking to miss the playoffs.

TO CLARIFY: all trades contingent on resign talks + resign

thought it was clear in the trade descriptions that these would ensure non-rental

Chicago would turn down this deal? Thought it could go either way, legit top 3 generational talent playing in the league right now. But no problem, Leafs keep.

100% agree Tage could probably be the best contract in the NHL in the next few years.

But also noting, Tage will never surpass either Marner or Nylander's career high let along both together.

So sabres lose a leader in tage on a steal of a contract to possibly sign two players to ridiculously bloated contracts and destroy the sabres cap?

Tage already passed nylanders best season while playing hurt and tage has outscored marner the past two seasons.

Obviously Chicago turns it down. 1 year of Matthews does not carry remotely as much value as you seem to think. Matthews doesn't help Chicago tank for more top 5 picks, and he would obviously never sign an extension with a bottom feeder. Whereas Chicago will have Bedard for at least the next 8 years

Both of these deals are huge wins for TOR, and huge losses for the other teams. Both offers are instantly declined.

"No player will surpass the career highs of two very good players combined."

Would you trade like 7 depth players who have 25 points each for McDavid? Combined, they have more points than McDavid has in a season!

Agree with what you are saying but that's not what I said.

"Tage will never surpass either Marner or Nylander's career high let along both together."

This means....

Marner's career high > Tage's career high
Nylander's career high > Tage's career high
Marner + Nylander's career high > Tage's career high

Clarified for you

1. Why would he re-sign with a team that will be bottom 5 in the league guaranteed?
2. Why would Toronto get more when Chicago is the team signing him to an extension?
