you;'re giving all that up for a 26 year old that had one breakout year. Marchasault is good, but not worth that at all

I just feel like that isn't that much to give up. Sanford's ceiling is what, a 3rd line center or 2nd line wing if everything goes right? Gunnarsson is always going to be a 3rd pairing D-Man. Marchessault is 1) available and 2) worst case a 2nd line center with a ceiling of a true 1C. 2 picks in the 20s as well?

Maybe I'm undervaluing those 4 things, but we need a 1C and this seems like the easiest path.

Yeah we need a 1C, but Marchessault is not the solution. If he was that good, wouldn't FLA protect him? Wouldn't TB have done more to keep him around rather than letting him walk? He's 26 so he's not going to develop/mature into a better player at this point. Yeah, he had a productive year last year, but he has never shown that he can carry a team.

I like Sanford's potential. And You're right about Gunnarsson. But you're dead wrong about the 2 picks in the 20s. You know who else STL drafted in the 20s? Fabbri, Berglund, Oshie, Perron... all NHL regulars... all better than Marchessault. Hell, Brent Burns was drafted like 20th overall, I can't think of others off the top of my head, but to say those picks don't have value is insane!

I never said they don't have value at all! But, you also just named a bunch of 3rd/2nd liners. Sure productive players, but no franchise changers. That's also why I said this seems like the easiest path, while we disagree on whether or not Marchessault is a 1C. It was also the first year he played a full season.

The problem with the draft picks is that we need to find a 1C while Tarasenko is in his prime, and we do not have one anywhere in our clubhouse, prospect or not. This draft is noticeably weak and I'd rather we gave up those two picks for someone who is really going to move the needle. I'm open to anything!

You're right, but I just don't see it in Marchessault. I agree with what you're saying about grabbing a 1C quickly, but we could do better with the assets you're putting out there. Personally, I think we'd be better off trading 20 OA and 27 OA and a roster player to reach up into the top 3-7 of the draft and select a center (Nico/Vilardi/Glass). This draft is not as weak as people are saying, there just isn't a McDavid/Eichel/Matthews/Laine. And it may take a year or two to develop the prospect, but that is about the only way to find a 1C, save trading a fortune away. Stastny can fill the gap for a year.

That's an interesting idea - maybe the two picks and Schmaltz/Walman for the Stars pick?
