Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 19, 2023
Published: May 19, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Deeper team
Better puck rusher/crease clearer pairings
Getting youth in
Attard, 6'3 and 6pts in 16 games and playing well, is a better 2 way RD than timmins, who didnt dress at all in playoffs (liljegren saw only 5 games) and maybe a better partner for niemala/reilly in future, Niemala takes a RD spot when Brodie hits UFA in 24-25.
Dube/Laughton coming off career years, both gritty and adaptable, solid 2 way guys, expiring Toffoli a lesser replacement for expiring Nylander.
Brings in youth and some missing draft capitol, while making a better, deeper team with better cap hits and two way play.

Huge overpay for Nylander

I thought about it, maybe the 2nd isnt included, but probably not a deal CGY makes, whereas its a deal I think TOR SHOULD if available.

REALLY its about TOR fans to start to think about getting multiple (and longer term) good pieces to make a team instead of believing they can get a marner for a marner....

No. Nylander is an 80 point rental player and Toffoli is a 70 point rental player. Dube is a 35-45 point middle 6 pending RFA. Anything past that is an overpay, the cap also has to work for the Flames so retention is bot an option at all

Yeah maybe, although Toffoli is not really a career 70pt guy and older, based on both being UFAs and on 22-23 alone, its overpayment. Nylander would be resigned with CGY with the idea that he joins Huberdeau/Kadri/Mangiapane/Lindholm long term while some of their high prospects break in. But it is a CGY overpayment and TOR is better served seeing if toffoli can maintain that production and Dube (coming off a career year) can bring some offense and speed to that 3rd line. (The retention was a late add, only for toronto to afford acciari, but again it adds to the imbalance)

You are correct though

Keep your 40 point winger and rental that would cost a fraction of Nylander to obtain at the deadline. Nothing good enough to trade Nylander here. Toffoli is so good, you guys can resign him, he's in his early 30's so he fits your window. Nylander isn't getting traded. Especially for a loss.

Two noted leaf trolls arguing about the terrible value Nylander has. Hilarious

There is no guarantee Nylander would re-sign at all, nor is there one that Toffoli would. Conditional re-sign picks are illegal now and Sign & Trades aren't a thing for pending UFA's. So they are both rental value.

Also to put this trade into perspective. NYI traded pick 17 + Beauvillier + Raty for 2/5ths a season of Bo Horvat. #16 + Beau is roughly the same value as #16 + Dube, Raty can still technically be called worth a 2nd. IMO the gap between 82 games of Nylander and 30 games of Bo is not a difference of 82 games Toffoli

Pass from the Flyers. First, we don't need more wingers. Second, we do need D. Third, Laughton is the Flyers heart, you will have to overpay to get him.

I see what you are trying to do but any trade needs to work for both sides. The gap between Nylander and Toffoli doesn't justify including Dube, a first, and a second. If you can't make a one for one trade I think you're likely making a two for one trade

Flames easily accept. Whoever thinks this is bad for CGY is incredibly stupid

Are you that dense? Nylander is 27 and coming off back to back 80+ point seasons. Toffoli is 31 and had never passed 60 points until this season.

Do some more research past looking at the most recent season on hockeydb
