Next year with big changes

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 20, 2023
Published: May 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buffalo gets a very good defensive LD/RD to support their dcorp (I hope we keep Brodie).
Seattle gets a super star upgrade. Leafs get a replacement player, picks and cap space
Columbus gets a ppg veteran centre to help teach and support their young stars. Leafs get cap space and a replacement player. Tavares would be a perfect stop gap for one of their young guys to take over. He would provide a ton of leadership as well. Tavares is still a 9m dollar a year player. Clearly 11m is too much but I think 2 years of Tavares on Columbus would fit so perfectly for what they are trying to accomplish.
Chicago gets a pick upgrade. Leafs get cap space.

24 man roster here. 22-23 man roster could be used if a bit more money needs to go free agents.

Matthews extends 12m x 8 years
Nylander extends 8.5m x 8 years

Let's play under the assumption that all NTC's are waived here.

Thoughts?

I posted similar AGM a few days back. Was generally well received. Would love to hear more feedback though.

Tavares is clearly the better player. But his cap hit is 11m. Tampa gave Ryan Mcdonaugh away for FREE. He was a huge part of their stanley cups and their run to the finals and they gave him away to Nashville for nothing. Because CAP is a thing. That's what this trade is with Columbus. It frees up a lot of cap for the Leafs to adjust the rest of their roster.

You have be joking about that CBJ trade. Tavares waives to a last place team? Buffalo isn't giving up that for Brodie. I doubt Seattle trades for Marner just for cap reasons.

Mayfield at 4.5m X 3. Bertuzzi for six years? C'mon

Matthews isn’t staying so trading Mitch means sending away someone who wants to be a Leaf while pretending we are going to resign a guy who’s not from here and is 1 year away from the open market.

This AGM is based on Matthews and Nylander agreeing to extensions. If they don't agree to extend, they have to be traded this offseason.

What does a reasonable Mayfield and Bertuzzi contract look like to you?

The Mayfield contract I listed here is the absolutely lowest I think he will go for.

I really don't see a Matthews or even Nylander trade this summer. Leafs management will have to decide whether they are "going for in 2024" or sell their UFAs at TDL where their cap isn't so much for contenders. You comment about Marner kinda true, but he's in the same UFA position the following season

Sorry it's usually nonsensical to base a trade on a extension to another team and the new contracts start one year away.
I don't know what it about so many CF fans, especially Leafs fans. Leafs acquired Tavares, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Bunting, Samsonov, Brodie, Holl all via UFA and didn't pay a thing for them, but somehow Leaf fans seem entitled to a good return for their outgoing UFAs

An I don’t see any reason why Matthews would stay. Nylander is another story.

I didn't base any trade in this AGM with the assumption of an extension. I made the AGM around the idea that Matthews and Nylander extended with the Leafs and thus we keep them. Time will see what happens in that regard. But this is fairy tale land. So we can post the stipulations of a AGM as we see fit. "In this scenario, this is what I would do".

Mayfield is a good 3rd pairing Dman...which don't get paid 4.5m. Really what's so special about 50 point Bertuzzi (per 82 games). He's injured a lot too,

So what do you propose both guys get on the open market?

BTW - Mayfield averaged 21 minutes a game in the regular season (second on the team behind Pelech) and 21:27 minutes a game in the playoffs behind Pelech and Pulock. Islanders are a good defensive team. So he is a top 3 dman on a top 10 defensive team. Not sure where you get that he is a 3rd pair dman from.

Whatever. I guess I was still in dismay that Tavares waives his NMC to play in Columbus, just so you could make those UFA signings.

Are you going to give me your guesses as to what Mayfield and Bertuzzi sign for on the open market? You criticized my evaluations on the signings, so what do you suggest they get?

Seattle accepts, and the Toronto Media roasts you for years as he puts up 90 point seasons out west.

It gives them the cap to sign a guy like Kane. So Kane, Bjorkstrand and the 3 picks. Looks better when you see what they can do with that cap. But I get it. I love Marner, don't love trading him but I see it as a genuine possibility right now.

Having 3 x 11m players is too much. Somethings gotta give!

Congrats, you turned the 4th place team in the NHL, a team that advanced as far in the playoffs as all teams except 4 — into a non-playoff team. Que the rebuild for the next 56 years.

Please explain what you see that makes this team a non playoff team? Where you see the deficiencies in the team I just created to make them miss the playoffs?

Oh sure, some team might sign them to an outrageous amount....but the is because they paid the most, which kinda shows the other 31 GMs wouldn't pay that much .
Yep, your Betuzzi contract will probably be would he signs for. Is this 50 point winger worth it? No.
Mayfield 3.35m X 3

By the way, I was more critical of those insane trades. Can you explain why Tavares waives to Columbus?
