Would trading for Iafallo be better than re-signing Zucker?

Yup, gonna cost us more for Zucker and Zucker is older and raises injury concern. Absolutely I take Iafallo here by a longshot. He has Penguin written all over him.

please no to the jarry signing, he has proven unreliable, it is time to do something else.

Are there really much better options on the free agent market tho? Opposed to spamming first and second round draft picks and our entire prospect pool for Hellebuyck or Gibson?

He's the best UFA goalie available and hasn't really proven to be unreliable. If they could feasibly get Saros or Hellebuyck - sure - but Jarry is realistically the best bet

Yup, I came to that fruition months ago. Highly unlikely we roll 23-24 with a new starter. HIGHLY unlikely that is.

The cap part makes sense...but I think Zucker, Bunting, Domi and Killorn are all better options for 2LW. All will be in that $5m range.

Yes! Because it’s not like we are going to get returns for players that do nothing on our roster! Unless…. we spam cap dumps and blow through all our assets like every penguins fan thinks is in store!!! Ahhhh what a great plan for the future right?

And if we can’t afford to bring Zucker back (which is likely due to other areas on the team that need attending to) then you go with a proven winger like an Iafallo and for less AAV and ideally the same or close to it in production.

Also cap is a major reason why, as you can see here we can’t afford any of those guys on their respective soon to be contracts, hence why I went and traded for Iafallo.

Yup, and it’s a sigh of relief even knowing that FSG looks like they are a promising ownership group and are going down the right path to get us our new GM. Even if it’s not Dubas, the finalist list was pretty damn good for my liking. I like the work they’ve done so far.

Agreed. Unless they realize in the offseason that those injuries he suffered in the back half of this season are chronic and he'll never be fully healthy again - he's going to be the Penguins starter. And honestly, I'm okay with that. I don't know why a large chunk of this fanbase acts like he's terrible. A healthy Jarry is probably in that 8-10 range of goalies

I gotcha man, just having fun. It can be a little triggering so see people throwing away 2nds to get rid of guys who it would be easier to buyout.

2 things I will push back on though.

1.) If you're going to pay for Carter, you mind as well keep him.

2.) An NHL team is only allowed 2 buyouts per offseason. You have 3.

Edit: I can't find the rule, so maybe #2 is wrong...

Yea I mean I really don’t want Carter on the roster though, there are a variety of better options on that wing that could really open up the bottom 6 and open doors to production and a better collective group solely by replacing Carter.

I agree. Everyone was so hard on FSG before we even knew them haha. But they're turning out to be pretty good so far. There's not one person on the list that I would be upset with.

I'm coming around to this idea. I just think we need a new backup if Jarry comes back. And it would have to be a cheap prove it deal for Jarry

No doubt about it. I mean when Jarry is on his game we’ve seen how dangerous this team can be and how quick they heat up. Though I do think there needs to be a stronger candidate behind him in part to the reasons you listed of injury concerns and the uncertainty if he is THE GUY going forward for years to come.

100% would be no more then $4m I’d assume for Jarry. A year or 2 max.

So many upgrades at backup too in FA that are available man, DeSmith we could probably juice out a third or 4th if we are lucky but I do think we could use a better backup. Gonna come at the cost of a couple more million being spent in net though. And there are certainly other glaring needs that need to be addressed before our backup goalie.

I just don't think there's a ton of other options. Jarry has his issues for sure - but if they're solely looking at UFAs( which they most likely are) I don't really see an upgrade available. I'm fine with Desmith as a backup to be honest. There's definitely better goalies available than Desmith(Anderson, Varlamov, etc) - but if those backups are going to be in the 3.5-4mil range I think the money might be better spent elsewhere. It's tough to know though until people start getting signed and teams filling out. As far as Jarry's deal - I'm guessing 3x4.5. I doubt he comes back on some cheap prove it deal - somebody will give him a decent contract.

For sure. If there was a clear upgrade I'd be all for it. Even the next closest options(Anderson and Varlamov probably in my opinion) have their own injury histories as well. Everybody loves Hill but the guys never started more than like 22 games in a season. A lot of the options have some kind of worry point to them.

I touched on this in my response to pensfan21 as well - I'm not opposed to an upgrade over Desmith. I just worry that using the extra 2mil on a skater might be more valuable to the team than a backup goalie. But it's tough to say until people start getting signed.

I love it. Bennett and Iafallo are both perfect fits. Exactly what we need. Only thing is I think they could maybe do a little better than Graves. I think he is decent but value may be a little inflated because of how good Jersey is defensively. I like Gavrikov, Orlov as potential options. Tough thing is there's not a ton available for LHD.

Well Carter is bottom 3rd in the NHL of preventing goals, he does have a 50% corsi and is in the top half of expected goals. He isn't a waste, just overpaid.

Gavrikov is likely staying in LAK and Orlov is too high of a price point for us to pay so the most likely one would be Graves I’d feel like.

You forgot to mention Jeff Carter in the face of circle! That’s just about the only thing he brings to the table for us these days
