Variation of an earlier proposal

Created by: KentMcNally

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Montreal and San Jose swap picks and Montreal takes on Vlasic (with some retention) for doing so.

Maybe San Jose does not want any cap relief whatsoever, which would mean they would not do this trade, but if they did want cap relief then they are only moving down 1 spot to get one of Michkov, Smith or (less likely) Carlsson.

Helps Montreal avoid the possible "Michkov dilemma", if it actually would be a dilemma for them (maybe it is not).

Helpful comments are welcomed.

MTL pick whoever falls to #5 and they don't take one of the worse contract in the league
They got the easy pick here at 5
Personally, I think Michkov goes 4th
MTL will end up with Will Smith IMO

Can't see the Sharks moving back 1 spot and retaining.
They don't need to trade Vlasic anymore.

I think Smith to Columbus, there are lots of rumours saying that the management likes him.

San Jose's GM said that they wanted to get bigger. Lots of their top prospects are small (Bordeleau, Eklund) so them picking Carlsson would make a lot of sense

Sharks arent moving Vlasic. He had a pretty decent year last year and regardless, while rebuilding there is no point in retaining to move him. Sharks arent trading that pick without a significant package coming back, period.

Who do you think the Sharks will take at #4?

90% sure Grier takes Will Smith. If Carlsson is available maybe he takes him but i’d guess Jarmo wants Carlsson. Too many questions about Michkovs availability and his size is a concern as the Sharks have too many undersized prospects.

That's what i would do if I were San Jose too.

Follow up question: Would you do the trade with Montreal involving Vlasic if (for some reason) Columbus takes Michkov and both Carlsson and Smith are available at #4 and #5? (Assuming Montreal wants one of the two badly and calls San Jose about a trade)?

What if Montreal throws in a B prospect like Kidney or Engstrom?

Mike Grier has already stated it would take a “significant offer“ to get our pick. Vlasic has a NMC and stated just last year he would not waive it, hes been in SJ his whole career and wants to be here when it turns around and he is not the kind of guy that wants spotlight, SJ is great because there are only 3-4 writers covering the team full time and they do not reach national media very often. Vlasic hates being interviewed, even in SJ but he loves the team.

Personally there is no point in retaining salary to move Vlasic during a rebuild which still has 2-3 more years before being competitive again. We can easily keep him on the team and scratch him if need be but David Quinn and Mike Grier both praised his play this year and he did have a decent year especially when paired with Erik.

Vlasic will finish his contract in SJ. The offer of Kidney is not sufficient and Engstrom is an LHD which we already have 12 signed and he would be buried behind Thrun, Mukhamadullin, Okhotiuk, Knyzhov basically never getting a chance here. I think if MTL wants the pick bad enough they need to offer Mesar and a 3rd as well while SJ keeps Vlasic. I would accept Mesar, 5th overall and a 3rd round pick from this year.

I'm probably missing something but why would MTL need to trade under a scenario where Carlsson and Smith are available for SJ and MTL @ 4th & 5th? I'd assume both teams will be happy with either guy. Highly doubt CBJ takes Michkov

Just in case Montreal was much higher on one player over the other.

Not that I have any inside information but it seems that sometimes a team really prefers one player over another (both of whom may look more or less equal on paper) due to interviews, draft combines etc.
