I don't mind the Hanifin for Guentzel trade from a Flames perspective. However, the Flames don't need a goalie back for Vladar. They will be looking to give Wolf an opportunity in the NHL.

I agree, he is acquired from the flames perspective to either be the AHL starter (would only count 600K against the cap) or the NHL backup in case wolf fails to make the NHL jump and needs more time in the AHL.

I don't really like either deal.

Garland doesn't have that type of value right now, and while one of Joseph or Smith could (and IMO should) be part of a package for a middle 6 forward or top 4 defenseman, both shouldn't. Dumo's time here is very likely over.

I also would want a more substantial return for Jake. I would rather have Casey over Vladar; he's slightly cheaper and was better this year (arguably the worst season of his career). I would love to have Hanifin, but I'm a lot more bearish on him than probably every Flames fan. The difference between him and Jake is more than a 2nd IMO. Furthermore, there's still a Guentzel sized hole in our forward core that our aquisitions don't really fill. I wouldn't call any of them snipers, and finishing was already a huge issue. The depth is definitely better, but the top 6 is significantly worse.

Not a fan of the Garland trade. There's several players you get get in free agency for that spot and you don't have to give up Smith and POJ. And one of them should clearly play over Dumoulin.

If Hanifin and a 2nd is all you're getting for Guentzel I'd just keep him.
