This is what to do Brendan

Created by: MacanBayangan
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2023
Published: May 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Have retained on Matthews and Nylander to get maximum returns. Although the team loses two core players and may step backward initially there is definitely enough young promise there to challenge soon and can be argued the lineup is a lot more balanced. Would hope that Byfield can become the eventual 1C in this scenario.

Overall the D and goaltending gets a big step up and who knows, if this team made the playoffs then that is what might make the difference if we continue to not light it up consistently in the playoffs.

Probably should consider that wherever it may be, Matthews might only agree to sign for 5 or 6 years. So, that could affect the return as well. Either way, I don't see LA parting with both Byfield and Clarke in any trade (especially Clarke), and I wouldn't be surprised if they acquired Matthews without including either. Clarke is the future of the LA defense and his ELC should come in pretty handy.

The CGY trade is also very wishful thinking. CGY is likely to lose two of their top 4 D (Tanev and Hanifin) sooner rather than later, I don't think Conroy is looking to weaken his team by trading a cost-effective player with 3 more years.

Canucks pass, gonna take a lot more than that package of spare parts for us to part with Demko.

Those are pretty high returns, but ultimately not sure how well long term it leaves the other teams or whether it provides them with what THEY want.

Also theres some big maybes offered by the Leafs. Take for example the trading of Samsonov's rights, who might be had for free if the leafs cant pay someone to take murray FIRST, or the upside of Niemala, hes a very good RD prospect and certainly the star defensive prospect of the Leafs, but hes not a sure thing top 4 NHLer at this point, and also the current baggage/taste in the mouth of some of the key offerings, (CGY wanting Brodie back?), like liljegren, entering his expiring RFA year, unestablished as a top 4 dman in his 5th pro season and only dressed in 5 of 11 playoff games = you're not selling high. Samsonov's rights or Liljegren probably is the price ALMOST for someone to take Murray, who at 4.6mil is too unreliable (who is more often than not on IR, and the LTIR cap benefit is less relevant for a rebuilding team) for even a backup role. Or 24 yr old Sharangovich who's played two whole seasons and put up 40+ and 30+ pts for late in the round 3rd and 4th TWO drafts away and robertson, who's value is probably a 3rd, NJ probably gets more, but not sure why NJ would take that? And while CGY might be interested, they need a RD more in the organization than another winger.

But ultimately a team that finished the regular season in the top 6 of teams, brings in NINE new starters? Their window is still NOW, I just cant see trading 2 of the big 3, even though it likely ends with a better TEAM.

Might get Byfield but probably not getting Clarke.

Calgary isn't trading Andersson.

Some decent pieces going to Vancouver but unlikely they're trading Demko, they'd be crazy to imo.

Nj is better off keeping Sharangovich then trade him for that, cant see Robertson's stock being very high.

LAs best course of action is to wait.

The Kings still need to get their starting goalie and LD.

After July 1st Matthews dictates wheee he goes, if that’s LA they are trading from a position of strength.

If he makes it to free agency the Kings get Kopitar and Arvidsson off the books.

For LA it’s a no brainer, the team gets more well rounded and becomes a more enticing destination by not going for Matthews at all this season.

Sharangovich is a surplus, he didn't make a dent in the playoffs and is going to get passed by new young talent coming up. Not that the Devils are completely against the cap, but would rather have the flexibility and more of a right fit on the 3rd line as he shouldn't be making the top 6 without a few injuries.

I think Jersey gets more, I dont think theyd move shara only to get robertson and some low in the round picks two drafts away. He might be surplus, but hes got better value than that

Adding another year to JT legs, he should be LW because he just can't get back to support. Don't see that power forward added to the top 6 in the matthews trade.

Calgary isn't trading Andersson

Echo this. I wouldn't be surprised if Calgary gives him a good look for captaincy.

Maybe, but there are many who don't even want to chance it with his QO and move on and try out guys like Foote and Clarke on an ELC than pay Sharangovich $2m. I don't want to overvalue a player so much as to hold out for a 2nd when depth picks is where this scouting report has done well.
