Patching the LD leak in the Kraken boat

Description
With Carson Soucy headed to free agency, the Kraken have a hole at 3LD to fill this offseason. Team defense is an area the team will likely be looking to improve, so look for them to make some defensively reliable additions here. However, their top defensive prospect at Ryker Evans will be ready sooner rather than later. With that in mind, in the absence of a true difference making addition at the position, the Kraken will likely pursue veteran stopgaps at that position to hold down the fort until Evans seizes the job. There are a few ways to accomplish this:

Option 1: Roll with internal options. Jaycob Megna was mostly a 7th defenseman in Seattle, but before he was traded here he was a solid dman for San Jose and partner for Karlsson. Cale Fleury was also an extra defenseman last season, but played well when called upon. Either or both of these guys could probably tag-team with Evans and adequately fill roles on the third defensive pairing. The downside is that both are probably downgrades on Soucy, so the defense would be taking a short term step back. This would run counter to the expectation that the Kraken are looking to upgrade the defense this offseason.

Option 2: Sign a free agent. This could involve bringing back Soucy or signing another veteran. There are some decent blueliners available this offseason, but as is the case with free agency, there's a decent chance these guys will be overpaid. Many free agents will also be looking for term most likely, which may cause Evans to be blocked and stuck in the AHL.

Option 3: Trade. I've explored several different trade options below. With any deal likely to be a short term patch, I expect any deal to be more of a value trade, without many substantial assets being exchanged between teams. Of course, this could change if the Kraken decide to target a true difference maker on the back end, though those deals in general aren't very common and I'm not diving into those sorts of blockbusters here. However, some of these deals could end up providing a longer-term solution at LD.

Helpful feedback is welcome! I'm admittedly not super knowledgable on the defensemen involved in these trades and am unsure of many of the trade values so any insight would be much appreciated. Cheers!

Additional Details:
The idea here is that Seattle takes advantage of Boston's cap crunch and their own cap flexibility to gain a decent defenseman who can kill penalties for a year while Boston gains badly needed cap relief.

    SEA
    1. Edmundson, Joel
    Additional Details:
Edmundson is one of the few defensemen that can match Soucy's stature and would also be a veteran placeholder for a year. He has struggled with injuries, hence the conditional pick.
    MTL
    1. 2024 4th round pick (SEA)
    Additional Details:
Conditional 4th that becomes a 3rd if Edmundson plays at least 60 games in the 2023-24 season.
    3.
    SEA
    1. Joseph, Pierre-Olivier
    Additional Details:
I borrowed this from another ACGM, and I think the idea was that Seattle and Pittsburgh would trade from positions of depth to address shallower positions. POJ was a pleasant surprise on a disappointing Penguins blue line. He had some good contributions on offense but was more inconsistent in his own end. The hope is that his defensive play will improve, but the fact of the matter is he brings different skills to the table than Soucy, and whether he's the type of player the Kraken will want to replace Soucy is TBD. He'd be a more long-term solution, though if he sticks around the Kraken could accommodate by shifting someone to the right side.
    PIT
    1. Geekie, Morgan [RFA Rights]
    Additional Details:
Geekie so far has proven to be a capable bottom six center, though he could provide more if given the opportunity. He's a right shot center who excels at faceoffs, two attributes lacking on the Kraken's center depth chart. Because of that, I think the Kraken are more likely to extend him rather than trade him, but we'll have to wait and see.
    4.
    SEA
    1. Bean, Jake
    Additional Details:
Bean is a former first rounder drafted by Francis in Carolina, so there could be some residual interest there. There's a distinct possibility Columbus may move him to make room for their younger defensive prospects so the Kraken could be an option to take a chance on him and see if he can be a consistent full time starter. However, like POJ Bean is more a more offensively minded player, so he may not be a fit if the Kraken are looking for more defense from Soucy's replacement. He is also a less established option than the other players listed, so there's a bit more risk.
    CBJ
    1. 2024 3rd round pick (TOR)
    Additional Details:
Conditional; Columbus will receive the lesser of the two 2024 3rd round picks owned by Seattle.

Was it… was it… my ACGM?

Nah but jokes aside pens accept that. Joseph isn’t the answer for us right now and can be replaced by a much better dman while we are trying to contend and we get a young depth center on a cheap cap hit. It’s a win-win.

I think Edmundson is your best option. Could probably even get him retained.

Take out the condition on the 4th, making it a 3rd, and MTL retains $1.5m. Deal ?

That might work. I mainly put the condition in to hedge against Edmundson getting injured, but the extra cap space afforded by Montreal retaining $1.5M might just be worth removing it. Whether Seattle ends up needing that cap room will depend on how much their RFAs sign for, which will in turn dictate which version of the deal they prefer.

I'm a fan of Bean. I actually thought that was who we would take in the expansion draft from Carolina. I'd like to see Fleury get a shot but I just don't see it happening at this point. Megna just seems super slow.

I also think of the RFA forwards Geekie is probably the one coming back. Ron Francis project that took another step forward this year. Better two way player than Sprong, and more versatile.
