It's not that bad of a trade. Oilers are in a win-now situation, but i don't think they're going to give up on Campbell that quickly. One bad year won't matter, he can bounce back (see Bob in FLA for example). Adding a 2023 2nd + 2024 1st + Hollaway would be great for the Sharks rebuild but I'm not sure if they would go with the oilers as an actual trade partner within the division. I can see the sharks using the oilers and leaking info on their deal to get the price up and send EK65 to the east (all theoretical).

With this retention you'd essentially be paying Campbell 8.5 mil. I'd rather have EK65 at 11.5 than 8.5 for Campbell. He's straight up not good, he's only had good numbers as a backup. This would be awful for the Sharks cap situation. Campbell is not in any EK package unless there's 0 retention

One dumb idea that I had that wasn't included here was for the Oilers to retain a little bit on Campbell (like $1M). That way if you buy out Campbell in 2025 then his cap hit is under $2M for 4 years. Very palatable.

I think Campbell has to be included in any Oilers-Karlsson trade unless they do something like Yamamoto + Foegle + Ceci but then they'd have no depth and we'd have many players we don't want. Maybe that's better than one Jack Campbell.

This definitely would be a move with an eye towards tanking: no offense without Karlsson and no good goaltending is a recipe for another top 5 pick.

Your second option is the right one. Sharks are fine to take on cap dumps but not with term. Regardless I don't see a need from the Oilers with Ekholm and Bouchard already on that right side
