Testing the water

Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 26, 2023
Published: May 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Monahan signing bring him back for a year; this happens only if the medical staff are confident he can play. I also would add a 2.5M$ bonus; 2M$ for a minimum of 60 games played; plus a 500K$ bonus if the team goes into the series.

2. I chose PHI for Hoffman but really he could go to any team, and even for future considerations with retained salary

3. With the upcoming talent, I would like to see if WASH would trade Mantha for Armia and Pitlick costing less.

4. I picked Leonard, but this is thinking that Smith will go top 3 or 4 so I would think they’ll go for a winger with Suzuki and Dach being able to play center, with the addition of Dubois.

5. Edmundson may start on IR in order to ensure he is fully recovered from injuries.

I can see this making sense with the retained salary to flip him at the deadline for a profit -- say a 4th round pick, especially since the contract is 50% retained. Can probably retain another 50% and have it work for a team close to cap at the TDL.

No team is touching Hoffman.

And too bad you've about 3 years to wait on Ryan Leonard, As he's attending Boston College for the next 2 years or so.

It would have to be way more than a 6th to do this deal

Wpg says no, not even close. And what comments? Dubois hasn't said anything about wanting to play in MTL. In fact, he called it fake news lol.

This doesn't save enough cap space to be worth it for WSH. Better to just stick with Mantha for 1 year than have Armia for 2 (+ Pitlick for 1).

Two zero value players and a late first isn't close to PLD's value. What's Winnipeg's incentive to take less than a third of PLD's value at the TDL?

Yeah… HE called fakes news. Sure… nothing anywhere saying that but hey, you clearly are in his circle of trust. Actually, even better, his agent discussed this last year. If Chev doesn’t trade him to MTL he’ll either lose him when Dubois gets something between 6.5 to 7.5 in arbitration and they can’t make room for him or will need to give up other players to make that room, or pose him in a year and yeah, teams are interested for him, but knowing he’ll go UFA and want to see if Mtl is a destination for him they won’t pay a first and NHL caliber players.

Here’s the comment by his agent last year reported by an actual sports news media TheScore:
“ His agent, Pat Brisson, said Wednesday that Dubois would like to play for the Montreal Canadiens.

"Montreal is a city he would probably … I can talk about it because he doesn't have a contract at the moment - he's a restricted free agent," Brisson told TVA Sports in French, as translated by The Athletic. "Montreal is a place, a city he'd like to play in. That's all I can say about that."”…

Sure, but as you know, these are AGMs so we use this to do scenarios. Hence, while this doesn’t give them 3-4M$ extra, it still gives them two players able to handle the NHL plays and they could easily trade another player to provide a bit more space.

Problem with any scenarios concerning Dubois is that if I put in a first and a second round picks with players it’s either the “WE’LL GET MORE!!” or “ARE YOU CRAZY? HE’S WORTH A 3RD ROUNDER AT BEST!” either way I get the crazies from Win who think Dubois will get them the moon or the crazies from Mtl that want to give them a third and a prospect picked in the 7th round playing in Timbucktoo Iteland…

I’m just trying to give Win a fair deal at this time. While Dubois is young, he still hasn’t broken the 100 pts/year and his valie is a second line centerman capable of bouncing to the first if need be. So, I figure a high first round, a capable Center signed for a few years who can’t really demande out of that crappy city and a guy who can play hard and put up points would give them a balance until they can find a younger player who just wants to play in the league, even in Win…

"nothing anywhere that says that" lol. Go watch his exit interview and training camp interview this year. Heres a snippet: In response to wanting to go to MTL he said “there’s a lot of fake things out there, a lot of people saying they heard this or they heard that… at the end of the day, if I haven’t said anything or done anything, it’s just speculation.”

He's called it fake news more times (2) than he said he wants to be in MTL (0). His agent said "its somewhere hed like to play" in response to being asked if dubois would want to play in MTL. And then MTL media did its thing...

But hey, ignore facts if you want...

Do I think dubois wants to stay in Winnipeg? hell no. But MTL more than likely isn't his only destination.

But this isn’t a very good scenario for the Caps. They don’t need more wingers, they need better wingers, top 6 wingers. Armia and Pitlick don’t fill that need. Caps decline.

Yeah but you need, at least, a decent prospect in that package. Dvorak is seen by many WPG's fans a negative value (I disagree, but anyway). Pezzetta holds little to no value for a retooling/rebuilding team, other than a body to put in a jersey. And that 1st is very late. You need at least a Kidney-type prospect in there, otherwise, I'm holding on to Dubois if I'm WPG, knowing I'll get more value than that at the deadline, as a rental.

I added Windjammer to the ignore list, he just trolls anything that doesn't match his expectations of a player who is interesting but has never gone over a 63 pts career high.

He thinks WIN have the bigger end of the stick for Dubois. Can't figure out the player is RFA with arbitration rights which means if they low ball him for the contract or try to sign him for more than a year, he'll go to arbitration and most probably receive a one year deal over 7M$ which WIN don't have to match if they want a full roster. They have 15 signed players and 12M$ to spare. If Chev spends half his cap on one guy for one year, he'll just have handed the team to the next GM.

Yeah, you are preaching to someone who has the same idea in terms of value. But I would provide them with two more with the RFA rights of Gurianov and Sund instead of a Kidney-type. Gurianov does have potential if he can find the right linesmates. He was brought in late and had more points with the habs in 23 games than with the Stars for 43. Giving him a one year deal at his hit of 2.9M$ qualifiying offer gives WIN a chance to see if he can go longer terms without impacting their salary cap. Sund, work in progress, could bring him in for an AHL offer, or let him develop one more year in Europe.

Else maybe Norlinder as a add-on?

Same for me on Dvorak, he can be very good when he gets his chance, in MTL he got hammered because of his revolving linesmates.

As for Pezzetta, I think he's more than a fill in, he actually can provide good depth and can be a valuable asset for the fourth line on any team. Mtl just has too many 4th liners as it is and could offer him as a piece of the puzzle WIN needs to get those gritter guys on the ice.
